Can anyone help?
I have a Nokia 5800xm, which I'm using as a modem on my notebook, using the Nokia PC suite.
Problem is that when I connect using PC suite, I only connect at 115.2 kbps.
The area I'm in does have 3g coverage, as my e220 connects at 7.2

what am I doing wrong?

It could be, but when I connect using the e220, it says connected at 7.2mbps - is that at all relevant?

No not at all thats just the speed it syncs at if i'm correct.
3G runs at around 100-150kb/s... So there's nothing wrong with your connection.

BTW have you tried the app Joikuspot the lite ver is free? Makes your 5800 a wireless AP.. Love it!

Hi wonduhboy,

The 115.2 kbps you are seeing is the speed of the link between the computer and the phone. If you are connecting via Bluetooth then you can probably set it up to around 900Kbps. If you are using the USB cable then you should be able to go much faster.

I cannot check how to increase the speed of the link, but I seem to remember that you have to go to the properties of your modem to find the settings (Phone and Modem Options in the Control Panel and look for a Maximum Port Speed setting.)

If you don't set the speed of the link between your computer and phone to be at least as fast as the 3G/HSDPA speed (3.6Mbps I believe with the 5800) then it will always be slow.

goto speed.vodacom.co.za/speedtest (if you are using vodacom) and test the speed there. I use a u700 as a modem and it ALWAYS says 100~200 kbps but it actually runs at ~2mbps

I checked and the port speed is set to max (406800) and it still shows connection speed at 115.2 kbps, so this doesn't seem to work
It's also noticeable how much slower the phone is when compared to the e220.

Say what? 3G runs at 100-200kb/s it just does.... doesn't it?

The phone runs at 3.6mb/s and the card at 7.2mb/s. There should be a noticeable difference. Or am i smoking cheese?

The card will only run at 7.2 if you pay for the broadband "advanced" (with vodacom)

The software for the e220 will always say 7.2 mbps even if it isn't.

It is somewhere near there but HSDPA runs up to 7.2 mbps with vodacom. My u700 is hsdpa 3.6 and the 5800 is also 3.6
As for the op's question i dont think he's doing anything wrong.

Then it is possible that the connection is using some kind of initialization string which is setting it back to a default. Or that the 5800 is not actually using 3G? Sorry I can't be more help. I'll give it a bash with my 5800 this evening and I'll let you know what happens.

here are my results from speedtest.net using 5800
DL 0.89 mbps
UL 0.35 mbps
Ping 218ms

He isnt doing anything wrong. I just know for a fact that most phones being used as modems do not report the actual speed at which it connects where as the 3g cards software is programmed to always say 7.2 mbps even if it is only 3.6

Yeah the 5800 shows the actual throughput and not the marketing nonsense VC & MTN tosses at you ;)

lol I'm stumped.

Maybe there's a setting on the phone for 3G / HSPDA or something?
LOL yeah dude thats so weird. Okay maybe the card has a stronger antenna and is getting HSDPA while the phone has a weaker antenna and drops to normal 3G.

On the phone's screen top left corner does it say 3G or 3.5G when its connected? next to the two arrows?

regardless of using it as a modem or a phone, it says 3g or 3.5g, at the moment 3g. So that negates an antenna...?
Before this, I had a 6110 Navigator that did the same thing: showed 3/3.5g but connection was 115.2.
Aaargh!
