Using a wireless router as a HUB - Question regarding seeing who is connected

I had the following setup prior to buying the Linksys wrt54G Router/WAP:

1. USB ADSL Modem
2. Server
3. Other Computers

I inserted the wrt54G after the server and am using it as a hub/WAP. Just using the wrt54G like this is fantastic, and easy to set up.

Its working well and I am allocating IP addresses within a certain range,to connecting computers, using DHCP on the server (part of 602 lan suite).

My question is that when I scan (using a number of network scanning utilities)to see who is connected, I can only see computers that are part of the workgroup. So, even though the connecting computer is allocated an IP address, and is enjoying internet, I actually don't know that they are online. The only indication that they are online, is that I can see them downloading.

Any ideas. thoughts.
 
With the Sveasoft firmware, you have the ability to see who is connected by doing a wirless survey, via the web interface. I'm not sure whether the latest Linksys firmware allows this.

I think the Satori firmware is now available for free from Sveasoft

I have read on other forums about using the wrong firmware and turning your router into a "brick". I think I will try and do it another way. Thanks
 
I had a look at Sveasoft firmware, and it looks good.

Has anyone installed the alchemy firmware?

Is this what Jawug use?

I think I must re-assess my setup.
 
could you maybe post some of those recovery methods? I just bricked my DG632 with a firmware upgrade ...
 
Jawug run OpenWRT.
Powerful, but (for your average windows user), quite user-unfriendly.

I've bricked a few Linksys WRT54G's through my experiments.. and I've recovered every single one of them without even having to open them up. (warranty sticker still intact)

For everyone else who is looking to "supercharge" their Linksys WRT54G, the Sveasoft firmware is great. I've played with it, and I even run it on our AP at the office.
Your average user will never need anything more.
 
Your DHCP server should only assign IP's in a certain range, e.g 192.168.0.*

So just use something like nmap to scan that range.

Or am I missing the nail's head?!

Hmmm, never used a DG632 malec, sorry. Check Google there might be a way, will have a look at work tomorrow

As Nickste pointed out, you could also use something like angry ip scanner to scan only the DHCP assigned ranges, and see which hosts are alive?

I have used netscan, advanced IP scanner and advanced lan scanner and only scan the ip addresses allocated as available by the DHCP.

For instance I checked the ip address used by the connecting laptop which was 192.168.0.11 and my other pc ( part of the network) connected is 192.168.0.10, yet all I saw was the ip address of my pc and the linksys ip address, which i won't list here.

Interesting.

Installed Airsnare and will test once I get a chance. It seems quite good.

I think I will pay the $20 and get the alchemy firmware. For fun. See what happens
 
Thing is, it doesnt even assign me an IP anymore. Daffy any hints on more in-depth hints on recovering my modem, pls pls pls?

I also have the Linksys WAG54G. Works well. Sometimes two red lights appear under DSL Internet and then I have lost connection. Have been advised to reboot router and computer but why does this happen?
Do you have a Support Tel. No. for Linksys?

After re-reading your original post, I see what the problem is. You are assigning addresses via DHCP from the server, not from the Linksys WRT54g. In other words, wired and wireless devices get the same DHCP range. SO there is no way to tell if the DHCP client is wired or wireless.

I then would re-suggest the Sveasoft frmware (using the wireless survey), dont pay the 20 bucks, goto the site I linked to earlier, and check the mirrors there, all the firmware is available for download gratis. It is open-source firmware after all...

PS WRT54G_Wolf_W42_Alchemy_6rc1_by_TheIndividual.zip is the one you want
 
I see they have the "pre7a" version and a 6rc5. What's the difference?
 
The W42 (by Wolf) seems the best and most stable. The others are a bit buggy, wouldnt really recommend them...

I think we should open up a thread on this, so you guys who have some information, can pass it on to us the un-educated.

Because its not just a box sitting next to your computer, it is a computer, and I for one did not realise that.

Hi Robone

Daffy is probably the most versed with Open-WRT, as thats what he uses on the Jawug nodes.

I have only ever used the Sveasoft firmware on WRT54G's, and also tried MustDie on my WAP54G. I have now got Freya From Sveasoft for my WAP54G, but have yet to try it out.

Anyone else used any of the other firmwares?
