Hi all,

We have an existing 64k diginet line (for all internet/network traffic) and an existing proxy server running through the diginet line. We would like to use our new ADSL line purely for web browsing possibly re-routing the proxy through the ADSL. Would it be possible to run the ADSL and Diginet in paralel without losing the fixed internal IP structure that the Diginet allows us? (we host our own fileservers, website and domain internally) How do I go about routing just web traffic (proxy traffic) through the ADSL while keeping all other traffic running through the diginet and not interrupting our IP structure??

Also, the ADSL modem telkom supplied us with says "ADSL Router Pots" what exactly does that imply?

Thanx :)

Hi Anine,

ADSL Router Pots (Plain Old Telephone System IIRC) just establishes the ADSL link between your office and Telkom's DSLAM the same as your router does on the diginet line between your office and your ISP.

I do exactly this with a little linux box with 2 network cards and squid as the proxy (and of course iptables/ipchains firewall)

I am not sure what you mean by "fixed internal IP structure that the Diginet allows us"?
Your LAN probably has a private address range (non internet routable), your Diginet line has a "fixed" IP address on the router/firewall (internet routable)

Hi Ice, let me just get this straight - you've created your own ADSL router using a linux box??

lol, *me points up at the time of the previous post*

I wont even try to create an ADSL router myself, I just assumed that the ADSL line and ADSL modem/router was already in place :)

I suppose what I meant is I do understand that it is possible to just forward destination port 80/443 traffic from the router on the LAN to the ADSL modem/router which will take care of the natting.

Security wise this is not a good idea, since the ADSL is an entry point into your network, and should have a firewalled box protecting that entry point, hence my half a**** answer

or maybe I totally misunderstand what aswart is trying to achieve?

D.

Ahhhh, that clears things up a bit ;) Agreed, you can forward ports using linux, although I think aswart's problem lies a bit deeper than that.

I assume (to aswart) that your network is connected to another site hence the need for your fixed ip addresses. If thats the case, then I have a feeling that no, you won't be able to set-up both diginet and adsl together.
