Hi guys,

I have no knowledge of iBurst modems, and I was hoping that somebody could give me some advice. Is it possible to use an ADSL router as an access point to provide wireless coverage for other pc's on a network without needing to plug the modem out of one pc and into another to give it access ?

Is it possible to setup something up like this ? I imagine it is for the desktop modem, seeing that the normal usb one obviously don't have any wifi capabilities (that I know of). I'll confirm again this afternoon with a friend (for whom I'm inquiring this info) if its a usb or desktop modem, but pretty sure its a desktop one.

Any advice or pointers would be appreciate thanks.

PS: Like I said, I have no knowledge of any of the iBurst devices, so please excuse me if I mentioned anything that might not be possible.

IBurst is supported with the desktop on any wifi router with an ethernet WAN port that is configurable for PPPOE.

Examples: Linksys WRT54GL, Netgear WNR3500L.

Ok so one would basically just use an ethernet cable to connect the iBurst modem with the router and everything would be 100% ? Are there any specific settings that one would need to setup furthermore ?

It depends on what you mean by "ADSL router".
Some have an adsl modem built in and will have a port for the phone line. You could use those but would have to change a few things.
Others are more of a "broadband router" and don't have adsl built in but are better suited out of the box for sharing whatever else provides an ethernet connection, like an ethernet iburst modem. This will have a "WAN" port on the back for ethernet. Basically plug in your iburst and go.

It depends if you router has a eWan port. The older billions needed a script to be run to use ethernet port 4 I think as a WAN port.THe recent routers
come with a wan port to allow for what you want to do.It would help telling us the router model/brand etc

DD

It also depends on the Billion the 7404VGO good luck getting that LAN to WAN port configuration right, man did I struggle. Eventually caved and bought a little d-link

Yes. Connect the desktop modem to the broadband router, set up the connection on the router, as you would with adsl, and it should all be working.

Not really, but you will have to do port forwarding for your games. ;)

Best option is to go for a a normal router... no (adsl) modem included... they tend to be better wi-fi devices than the default supplied by telkom etc.
Using that you can setup the router to automatically login to iBurst using PPPoE... just add your iBurst username/password to the router menu (see manual)... You will connect the iBurst modem to the internet port and the rest of your pc's on port 1-4(5,8,16?). Thats (most of the time) it.

I am using my old adsl-router (w. modem) at the moment... what this means is that my iBurst modem is plugged into port 1, and on the 3 remaining ports (and wi-fi) I have my other devices. As is I can only connect one PC/device to my iBurst at a time using the connection manager to add a PPPoE connection. Only ONE.
If you want to be able to connect all your devices you will need to setup some sort of "connection sharing" on one of the PC/devices and have the rest of the network piggy back of that one (this PC needs to be ON if you want inet on the rest). This does place a liiiittle bit of strain on your overall network cause the data come onto your network from the net to the host PC and is then retransmitted over the network to the client device... not that much, but it is there...

If you are planning to buy a (modem-less) router, do your research... there is ALOT of junk on the market... but as with everything, I've seen a R300 super-kadeoke-whitebox-special do amazing things and a then a R1000 netgear router give only crap, crap, and more crap... and visa versa. I prefer a router w. little arials I can see... but maybe I'm just religious xD

G'Luck!
