Using DSL-2750U as a fibre router

I have the standard-issue Telkom-branded D-Link DSL-2750U (H/W rev. T1) ADSL modem / wireless router.

It turns out this will happily route Vumatel fibre via Ethernet WAN. I couldn't find specific steps for this device, so I'm posting this here in case it helps someone else.

This involves re-flashing with firmware for a different model, so caveat emptor. I haven't had any issues, but 3G USB dongle support might be gone, for example.

Here we go:

1. Download firmware from https://files.dlink.com.au/products/DSL-2750B/REV_T/Firmware/Firmware_AU_3.08_(25-03-2015)/

2. Plug the router directly in to a PC via Ethernet cable. Assign a static IP to the PC's Ethernet interface, in the 192.168.1.0/24 range (e.g. 192.168.1.10)

3. Boot into recovery mode: turn the router off, hold the reset button in with a paperclip, then turn it on, and wait for the power LED to go red.

4. Visit http://192.168.1.1 and upload the firmware.

Wait for the router to reboot and for LEDs to go green...

5. Open http://192.168.1.1 again and you should be able to log in (admin/admin).

6. Go to Setup -> Internet Setup and select the newly-available option "ETH" in "WAN services type".

7. Click Add, select protocol "MAC Encapsulation Routing". Leave the rest at their defaults.

8. Plug the fibre CPE into the router's LAN port 4. It doesn't have any special markings, but it's now a WAN port.

9. Request MAC lock reset from your fibre ISP (if applicable).

10. In the router's admin panel, under the Status tab, you should see a drop-down for Internet Connection. Select mer_eth4, and wait for connection status to show "Connected"... done!

I have not tried it but think you could make one of the ports on this router a WAN port by default. That should work without needing to flash it.

That's what I'm thinking as well, you just need a WAN port, but how are you going to get the option "ETH" on so you can do "MAC Encapsulation Routing" on it?

Not sure, thought this was handled by the CPE. Thought they use the MAC from the CPE and you can use any router. I am not with Vumatel so not sure how they do it.
 
Not working here, existing firmware AF_1.69_T10, getting an illegal firmware message when I try to upload the linked one.

Did you go via recovery boot (step 3)? It's a different process from a regular firmware update.
 
Wondering whether I should try this. I have the Retail version D-Link DSL-2750U (Also H/W rev. T1)

Hmm. Not sure. Sounds like router might not have been switched off first? You want to be holding the reset button before (and during) a cold boot.

Should work - probably exactly the same hardware.
 
Please help me withbthe following step:

Called Telkom and they have NO clue how to do this.
My status shows: “connecting”

MAC lock is a Vumatel thing. Not sure about the others.

For status, just be sure you are viewing the correct interface. You should have two - pppoe_x_x_x and mer_eth4 - and it's mer_eth4 you want to watch.
 
Followed the steps right up to the status showing connected. The problem is now that there is no internet connection via lan or WIFI.

Any ideas??

Maybe check and reset your LAN/WLAN settings e.g. IP and subnet mask, DHCP, and DNS. And check routing->default gateway is set to eth4.
 
Anyone know if this is possible with a DSL-2740U?

It has a WAN port but I'm setting my fibre up for the first time and a little confused as to the settings. Sorry, complete noob here. Line is vumatel so a bit reluctant to plug it in until I know it'll work.

My only assumption is WAN physical type should probably be set to ethernet WAN? Beyond that I'm clueless. In order to enter a u/pw, it looks like it'd need to set to PPPoE?
 
For any confused person reading this in future, it's simply Ethernet WAN and then DHCP on channel mode (for vumatel). Done.
 
Still using the DSL 2750U as a router/AP and it's doing a good job at 40mbps. I've offloaded DHCP and DNS to a Pi so it doesn't have much to do.

I bought this dlink 2750u router from cash crusaders and I followed everything I as guided and worked out ,thanks very however I would like to correctly on step 3,instead of power led Turning red pressing reset button and powering ,it turns green but its okay I went ahead and installed the firmware and everything worked out correctly
