I have the standard-issue Telkom-branded D-Link DSL-2750U (H/W rev. T1) ADSL modem / wireless router.
It turns out this will happily route Vumatel fibre via Ethernet WAN. I couldn't find specific steps for this device, so I'm posting this here in case it helps someone else.
This involves re-flashing with firmware for a different model, so caveat emptor. I haven't had any issues, but 3G USB dongle support might be gone, for example.
Here we go:
1. Download firmware from https://files.dlink.com.au/products/DSL-2750B/REV_T/Firmware/Firmware_AU_3.08_(25-03-2015)/
2. Plug the router directly in to a PC via Ethernet cable. Assign a static IP to the PC's Ethernet interface, in the 192.168.1.0/24 range (e.g. 192.168.1.10)
3. Boot into recovery mode: turn the router off, hold the reset button in with a paperclip, then turn it on, and wait for the power LED to go red.
4. Visit http://192.168.1.1 and upload the firmware.
Wait for the router to reboot and for LEDs to go green...
5. Open http://192.168.1.1 again and you should be able to log in (admin/admin).
6. Go to Setup -> Internet Setup and select the newly-available option "ETH" in "WAN services type".
7. Click Add, select protocol "MAC Encapsulation Routing". Leave the rest at their defaults.
8. Plug the fibre CPE into the router's LAN port 4. It doesn't have any special markings, but it's now a WAN port.
9. Request MAC lock reset from your fibre ISP (if applicable).
10. In the router's admin panel, under the Status tab, you should see a drop-down for Internet Connection. Select mer_eth4, and wait for connection status to show "Connected"... done!
