How to renew your passport or get a smart ID at a bank in South Africa

Home Affairs' online booking system for smart ID and passport applications at various bank branches offers South Africans a speedy and convenient process to get their documents.

A MyBroadband reader recently booked a slot to renew their passport at the Nedbank branch in Durban North and received the renewed documents seven days after applying.

Couldn't get a booking in Durban over a three month period, eventually went to home affairs at the beginning of January, still waiting for the ID with HACC constantly telling me it is still being processed.

To renew your drivers license
  1. Go to optometrist to have eye test
  2. Go to DLTC
  3. Hand fill in a green form
  4. Do eye test if you don't have (1)
  5. Sign on digital pad and hand in green form (3)
  6. Have digital photo taken
  7. Pay at cashier
Last time I went, it took of 4h-6h in queues
Collection took another 2h in queues

(3) and (7) should be online.
(1) should be electronically submitted by optometrist.
The rest can be done anywhere (eg bank, postnet, optometrist)
We should be able to go to optometrist and do renewals there.
There is nothing special in what DLTC is doing wrt renewals.

I don't disagree that the entire process can't be streamlined - I renew my UK license (every 10 years) completely online from start to finish and the same goes for my UK passport.
 
Got an ID appointment at Nedbank, Sandton (Jo'burg) in about 4 weeks, fetched it today after another 3.5 weeks. Short queues, good parking. Not bad.
