Using eSIM in dual SIM configuration on iPhone on contract

Since the iPhone Xs, iPhones allow the use of a SIM card and an eSIM in dual SIM configuration. However, Vodacom and MTN are notorious for blocking dual sim operation on phones.

Is dual SIM operation available on iPhones obtained through a contract?

If one gets an iPhone with a SIM card, can a prepaid eSIM be obtained through Vodacom or MTN to be used in dual SIM configuration?
 
Neither MTN nor Vodacom offer prepaid eSIMs.

Vodacom also only offers eSIM for smart watches.

Only Telkom and CellC offer prepaid eSIM.
 
I think that would be fine.

Telkom has the cheapest contracts AFAIK. I could always get a contract through them and get a SIM card from Vodacom/MTN.

MTN has 10GB for 150pm, which is tempting.

I must just confirm iPhones from Telkom allow dual SIM.

No service provider can dictate any kind of locking on the iPhone.

The problem is finding a provider with eSim that will work where you need it to.

Actually they can, it’s been reported that Vodacom does it regularly to the dual sim devices. They simply disable the 2nd sim and the only workaround is a custom ROM.

Not iPhones.

Read my statement again, and consider the context of the thread.
 
I switched to Telkom prepaid after MTN was useless and unwilling to help me with eSim.
No issues so far and Telkom’s rates are very reasonable.
 
Can't confirm for voice lines, but I have my Vodacom data contract as an esim on my iPhone.

Yes…basically just asked the consultant in a Vodashop to activate the esim service on my data line and then scanned the QR code with my phone.

He suggested to just do it from the watch itself, as also per the instructions on their website etc, but since I did not want to use it with the watch itself, I just said I don’t have the watch yet but want to do the activation so long.
