Hi there!

How would I use my wrt54gl as a modem? I assume that I plug my analog line (yes analog, adsl is coming in 22 working days! ) into the internet jack and then ethernet cable from my linksys 2 my pc, right?

When I do this my whole pc freezes!!! do I need to do some settings first or what?

Thanks

lol thats impossible. That is a router your are trying to use an analogue modem, its just not going to work. if youve still got one foot in the dark ages, u should still have your old analogue modem, plug the adsl line into that and it should work.

There seems to be something wrong with your system, check you network controller settings, make sure the tcp/ip settings are all set to automatic, also make sure that you have the latest driver for you network card. That's all I can think about at this moment. ;)

Edit: I agree with the above post, it won't work if your adsl line is not working yet, that might be the reason it freezes.

Lol ok! I guess it's called a "broadband" router for a reason :)

But lets assume telkom installs line 2moroz...would it be easy to set things up?

You have two options

An integrated combo ADSL Modem/Router like the Linksys WAG54GS

http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?StockID=75537

or

Buying a cheap ADSL modem/router and configuring that in "bridge" mode and connecting that to the WRT54GL which is a nice router which I would keep.

Here is the setup.

RJ11 Telephone-Line -->Cheap ADSL modem/router (in Bridge Mode)---->LAN Port ---> Ethernet Cable ---> WAN PORT on the WRT54GL

You configure your ADSL account settings in the WRT54GL and it will then use the magic of the PPPoE protocol to talk to the ADSL modem on it's WAN port to authenticate and start up your internet connection.

All firewall and routing duties will be handled by the WRT54GL.

I heard somewhere that with the wrt54gl u dnt need a separate modem/router...

I was told that u just plug the adsl line directly into the wan port of the wrt54gl... or do I need an additional modem/router ( I have a spare wrt54g )

you need to plug and ADSL modem into the routers WAN port

I have a WRT54GL and it only has RJ45 ports [ethernet], there are no telephone cable ports [RJ11], so yes you need an ethernet ADSL modem|router before you can share your ADSL using the WRT54GL, and if you get an ethernet ADSL router then you could configure the ADSL router for bridged mode if you wanted the WRT54GL to control the ADSL connection...

Guys I promise u that my router has an rj11 port as well as an rj45 port! the wan port is made in such a way to fit both!!!!

The routers webbased settings have settings for pppoe etc, wouldn't this be because the router can be a modem..?

No, iBurst uses PPPoE - it's certainly not a telephone line.

PPPoE is PPP over ethernet... uses an Ethernet cable.

wrt54gl doesn't have a RJ11 port.

It can make PPPoE connection, like any ADSL router, but it is NOT and ADSL modem, i.e. cannot sync or even plug into the ADSL network.

You do NEED an ADSL modem.

[Edit] an RJ11 plug will fit into the RJ45 WAN port (awkwardly), but note this is not a safe practice as telephone lines carry voltage and may damage the WRT.

So in conclusion, either you're a little mistaken, or you don't have a WRT54GL

HS, there's no way the GL accepts RJ11. If it does, it is by conincidence. As ic attests, the WAN port is simply another ethernet port configured as outgoing - and able to be configured as a normal ethernet port. No modem software to speak of. That goes for the software too - both manufacturer spec and OSS.

When telkom installs line 7 working days :) ill try it out and then I can contunue my arguement because i dnt hav any hard evidence! I also think that I need an modem but others disagree with me!

Oh no not "The Others" !!!!!

Bring "the others" to this forum, they will not last long!!!

Seriously, u will need an adsl modem if you only have the WRT54GL, no question about that.

:)

Please post a link to a photo so we can visually debug this for you [hint: http://imageshack.us].

headstrong, seriously, please give us a photo showing the RJ11 on your WRT54GL.
