Anyone tried using the Mifi while still connected to a wired LAN with ADSL connection?

The Afrihost service is much faster than my ADSL (Telkom exchange still only has 4Mbps & upload is max 0.4 Mbps).
ADSL has much cheaper bandwidth though.

So I am considering using the MiFi for fast up/download and the ADSL for bulk up/download.
Problem is just to get the routing working reliably so that I can leave both connected.

Suggestions?

Alternative would be to cancel the ADSL line and only use the MiFi (if service proves to be reliable).

However there are various other wired only devices connected on my LAN, so the local LAN connection needs to stay and the LAN will need a connection to the MiFi for internet access.

Thanks RichardG, I suspect that there are several ways to accomplish this, hence my question.
Care to share your idea?
Detailed step by step tutorial not required; I can use Google and have some (limited) networking knowledge... :)

I had the same idea of replacing ADSL as my experience with the MiFi/MTN so far was good, that was until this weekend when the lag spikes and disconnects killed my gaming. I have a fairly weak signal so will hold any decisions until I get an booster or antenna of sorts to re-evaluate.

[-]If I connect the MiFi with my router on I cannot get Internet via the MiFi. Somehow the router is taken as the default even when it's disconnected from the ADSL modem?[/-]Solved

:o The MiFi and Router had the same IP 192.168.1.1, I did change it before but when I tried the MDMA software for some reason sometimes it resets the MiFi back to factory settings. I forgot to change the default ip again. Now working fine!

This is part of the problem that needs to be solved.
The OS will generally default to a LAN connection if available rather than Wifi since LAN is usually considered more stable.
Some routing set up will be required.
Perhaps connecting the MiFi via USB as a modem to a host on the network and sharing the Internet connection to the LAN could work.

Can the MiFi only act as a wireless AP or can it connect as a client/host to an AP connected to the LAN?

There are various possibilities.

I am interested to hear ideas and/or solutions from the forum.

Simple solution is to get a 3G modem like the netgear MN3000 with a compatible 3G stick or test if the MiFi can be used as a failover when the ADSL Internet is not available. That is the simplest solution. There is someone who is doing exactly that in the MiFi threads.

What happens, in short, is this:

Add MiFi, your 0.0.0.0 changes from LAN to MiFi. Your LAN is still there, but the metric is higher (lowest wins).

To fix this, I assume you want to still have LAN access while having internet via MiFi?

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/adding-a-tcpip-route-to-the-windows-routing-table/

You'll want to add your LAN ip range and subnet mask using the above.

Just make sure that your LAN range is not 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 (<-- mifi).

Another question. Can the lan be accessed of the MiFi wireless link? I have to switch connections to my wireless router instead of the mifi..

Maybe I am overreacting but when I did the setup wasn't as easy as 1,2,3 took some time to actually set up but I like your recommendation about getting a Netgear router that supports 3G failover but then you will have to email the vendor*router manufacture* and insist/brag them to add support for MiFi

Or use the afrihost sim with a cheap USB modem?
