Using MTN phone on Vodacom & vice versa -Warranty???

Hey,

Would there be any issues if I used a Vodacom contract phone on MTN & vice versa? I'm asking because I know that there is this thing with the sim card that if you don't use it, the warranty on the phone expires. I just don't know whether you have to use the sim inside the specific phone.

I'm asking because I can get the phone my dad wants free on my MTN contract, and he can get the phone I want free on his Talk 1000s contract (would cost me R5500). So we're doing a swop.

i believe if you use an mtn sim in a vodacom phone and vice versa this would void the warranty.

trust me you dont want to void the warranty.. i remember i had many issues with my n73 and it went in for repairs about 6 or 7 times in the two year period and eventually they gave me a new unit, so you dont want to mess with the warranty coz you just get might get that 1 in 1000 bum handset that always gives problems.... it happens believe me!

Oh darn.

Now that's just what I don't need. I can't do anything that would void the warranty, because phones break. It's an unfortunate fact of life. Do you this for a fact?

Not a problem - as far as I can see.

Though, the usual warranties with the SP will apply.
MTN will cover the warranty with the phone they supplied and so too with Vodacom.

ok,

so I won't have any hassles doing this. Cool.

Check the vodacom website, put a sim from another network in their phone and no more warranty...

What a load of old cobblers. How can inserting another SIM harm a phone. Tell me that?
I would challenge terms like these, since they are obviously unfair and designed to be uncompetitive.

Technically, the phone doesn't belong to you until the 24 month contract is finished. You basically paying the phone off in the contract.

That being said, if there's a problem - just place the original sim in and hand the phone in to Vodacom...

ok, I've read their warranty information extensively, and i can find no mention of this. As far as I can see, the only relevant information on Vodacom's site is the following:

The Vodacom extended warranty is only applicable to active Vodacom phones.
#
An "active phone" for the extended warranty scheme purpose; is a phone which has been used on the Vodacom network for a period of at least 30 days in the last 90 days at the time of presenting the phone for repair under the extended warranty scheme. Usage includes making or receiving calls.
#
If a phone is "inactive" the one-year extended warranty is immediately void. In order to reinstate the extended warranty cover such a phone must be active on the Vodacom Network for at least 30 days in the last 90 days before it can be presented for repair. No claims will be entertained by Vodacom under any circumstances where the usage period has not been fulfilled (if for e.g. because the phone was broken and could not be used).
#
If a phone is inactive and becomes active again after a period, then the warranty period will not be suspended during the period the phone is inactive.

and this only applies to the second year warranty. The first year the phone is under "manufacturer's warranty".

MTN's website says pretty much the same thing, except they invoke the "30 days active within the last 90 days" clause for the whole 24 months, despite the fact that the first year is still a manufacturer's warranty.

hmmmmmm....

In my experience, if a phone is gonna die, it'll either die in the first 12 months, or on month 22 (upgrade month), right?

Can you provide some support for this argument.

Get a BlackBerry Storm 9500 PLUS a Car Charger FREE When signing an initial 24-month BlackBerry Talk 500s Contract at R999 per month for 24 months. You pay SIM and Connection (Once-off): R202.
So it's free, but you don't own it, is that what you are saying?

Read the contract.

If you decide to cancel the contract, you pay the remainder of the contract back to the SP.
We were talking about the phone, which is free. You sign the contract and then get the handset. If you break most contracts, you are liable to pay, so what's your point?

Show us where it says we can't use another SIM for 5 minutes.

I think you misunderstood me.

My first post stated that I find no problem whatsoever.

;)

The warranty in the contract is linked to the IMEI and sim number.

well,

I'm a gonna do it. let's see what old murphy has up his sleeve for me...

Please people - get this into your heads: CELL PHONES ARE NOT FREE. Nothing in life is free, not even the air that we breathe (We pay taxes so that government can control pollution).

However you want to look at it, they're financed over your 24 month contract.

Are you saying that Vodacom tells lies :eek:

Aah, nokia has it's own 24 month guarantee on the phone, thank goodness.
