Hi all,

I have MWEB's uncapped inclusive account for R359 or thereabout per month. I want to actually sever the line rental from the ADSL so that I can continue with their uncapped 384K ADSL, but I want to upgrade the line itself to 512K.

The reason I want to do that is because I do use other ISPs ADSL from time to time (axxess, etc), and I'd like to have the benefit of faster line speeds for that.

Does anyone know if there is problem using a 512K line with a 384K package?

Also, out of interest, does anyone know why mweb charge more for the data on the higher line speeds? I wouldn't have thought that affects them at all, or is this just a way to squeeze us for every last cent?

Regards,

John

I dont think it should be a problem, its just the speed at what they service it to you, so in other words, "your account" is "limited" on their network to 384k.
As to the higher prices on higher speeds, mmm, lol?
You can download more with a 4Mb line than a 384k line, so I think thats their thinking as well regarding the price. ?

your problem might come in that Mweb own the line.. since you say inclusive?

Hi,

Yes, that's why I said I want to sever it, ie, rent the line from Telkom directly and only the data from mweb...

I have used my 512kb/s uncapped shaped account on a friends 4mb/s line.

The speeds I got while downloading for a few hours were greater than that of a 512kb/s connection, my average download speed was around 65KB/s to 70KB/s, but while at home, on my 512kb/s telkom line I get around 40KB/s to 50KB/s - all on HTTP.

A 384kb/s MWEB account should perform better on a 512kb/s telkom line, if the same thing happens.

Absolutely it will - when my line got upgraded, it took a couple hours for the ISP to follow in upgrading and the speeds were WAY better!
