Hi,

Is there anyone that can verify that OpenDNS is properly working (site content filtering) other than just DNS while on Vodacom 3G?

I bought a Option Globesurfer 3G Router, changed to OpenDNS anywhere I could find anything resembling DNS ..... and the test sites was not blocked.

The other "sure cure" was said to change the local Windows access DNS to OpenDNS.... and still don't work..... so it seems to be a bigger problem than just my local netword or router setup.

I contacted Vodacom and actually got a quick respond.... but a bit worthless feedback like "what OS are you useing".......3G router remember.....sheesh. But they did say the OpenDNS must work.

Next I contacted Option support and told them the DNS does not work - they confirmed it IS working and said it must be my ISP.

Now.... true or not. They say its possible that Vodacom grabs my DNS request and forward it under a DIFFERENT IP address to OpenDNS. So OpenDNS never know when its really my IP that is trying to make a request. I tried using the OpenDNS IP update tool....... but it then makes sense that the IP I see that is 'assigned' to me... is not actually the IP making the the DNS request........ thus OpenDNS never kicks in.

So can anyone tell me if they can setup the OpenDNS to prevent eg. chat and p2p sites.....and that openDNS is actually blocking them (as it is supposed to if it is correctly set up!).....and that this is working on Vodacom 3G (HSDPA if that matters).

Thanks in advance! :-)

QUICK ANSWER..... OK, SUCCESS :-) It does NOT work with the standard Internet APN

With APN set to unrestricted (need to be activated by Vodacom and need written request, see thread) the OpenDNS service correctly started do content filtering. No further setup needed and all PCs on the network is regulated..... very nice for parental control, web and content filtering, protection form malicious/phishing sites etc.

My first question would be, what is wrong with using the automatically assigned DNS servers?

Hi morkhans,

Content of my message was maybe NOT that clear...no looking to edit it again. A GREAT feature from OpenDNS is that they do SITE CONTENT FILTERING as well.... that is what I am interested in. Getting DNS resolved can happen just about anywhere on the net.....but getting content filtering at the same time then OpenDNS stand out above the rest.

Just FYI... IP address assigned to me
OpenDNS show my IP as Your IP: 196.207.32.36
My Router show my Internet IP as 41.27.125.5 (also what the OpenDNS IP updater tool show)

So that could explain why OpenDNS content filtering is not working.........but is it a good thing from Vodam that it is NOT working????

Thanks

morkhans - I see that you are able to edit the topic/header/subject.... can you please change mine to include (CONTENT FILTERING) please. Many thanks

PS....from OpenDNS.....see security below (oh and its free, and its supposed to WORK brilliantly as long as you don't browse with known site IPs)

Make your network safer, faster, smarter, and more reliable.

Here are just a few reasons millions of people have already made the switch:
Start using OpenDNS! It's free.

Security
* Industry-leading anti-phishing protects everyone on your network from fraudulent phishing scams.
* Award-winning Web content filtering gives you the power to block up to 50 categories of content.
* Detailed statistics empower you to understand your network traffic and spot trends before they become problems.

Have you tried changing the DNS settings on your PC to use the OpenDNS DNS IPs, thus overriding whatever is assigned by the router?

Yes, as per #1 - not working (problem is NOT my router - its Vodacom using different IP's for my outgoing data requests....using a limited number of visible IPs thats shared by many users - that is what was suggested to me?). But anyway, I have a few PC's around the house (I'm seldom home too), and frequently kids friends visiting (more PC's).... I want the router to do OpenDNS and filter from a central point.

More useless info.... from www.whatsmyip.com

Your IP Address Is: 41.27.125.5 Possible Proxy Detected: 1.1 mvo-netcache-03 (NetCache NetApp/6.0.7)

I've read a posting or two about APN settings.... the old InternetVPN had apparently less proxifying on (and was also assigning the 41.x.x.x IP's) .... is there some other APN that can keep my assigned IP in the 196.x.x.x range?

Thanks for topic change :-)

Currently I use Internet as APN ... the VPN APN was anyway integrated into Internet APN....or is that another option to chase.

I will get the unrestricted APN working and give feedback.

Thanks Librarian, good suggestions too.... but OpenDNS just seems like the simple solution, remember I'm on Windows. OpenDNS might make life simpler for you too lol

Only hassle I see is to correctly update the OpenDNS servers with my dynamic IP, but if I leave the OpenDNS IP updater tool running on all the systems at least one should keep OpenDNS active.

Thanks for the feedbacks!

This thread can now be locked..... Thx
