I am in US and would like to remote control a friends pc in SA. I thought PcAnywhere would get the job done. However, when trying to establish a connection...found the ip address on her pc to be an "internal" address like that assigned by a router. She has the marconi adsl modem that seems to be so loved by the folks here. After using www.whatismyip.com to determine her outside address, I could still not reach her pc. Has any one worked support in SA and what product would you recommend? Pcanywhere uses UDP protocol...and after reading about all this "shaped" nonsense...I wonder if that is the issue. Maybe a product like www.realvnc.com is the way to go?

Also, configuring the marconi to forward requests on specific ports to specific pc ip address...is this difficult. Or can u simply allow that pc to hang out in the "dmz" while being remote controlled? Any experience and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I've used VNC without any issues and didn't have to do any port forwarding either ...

I've used msn messenger - needs Win XP on both machines.

I tried to connect to her outside ip address...but the attempt timed out. She has 2 pc's behind the marconi..all connected to a 10/100 switch. I think I will give real vnc a run. Do you think the connection attempt will see the pc waiting behind the router? Or will I have to configure the marconi? thanks!

You'll need to configure port forwarding to+from her internal ip addy (or use a server-type setup on the router?)

If you're willing to pay I've found NetOp Remote Control to be the best (http://www.netop.com). They have gateway software that allows you to administrate an entire network via one IP (static or not). If you want to go the free route then I've found RealVNC to be the best.

www.whatismyip.com does not determine the actual outside IP of her machine/router. It merely detects where the http request is coming from which, in South Africa, is invariably from a proxy server. For example www.whatismyip.com determined that my IP is 198.54.202.66 [ppr-cache1-vif1.saix.net] while it really falls in the 165.165.x.x range.

If/when you do get her real IP, maybe use Windows Terminal Services to access her PC (assuming she's running XP and you can get port 3389 mapped to her internal IP).

First thing is you need to setup port forwarding on the ADSL router to forward to your friends machine. Depending on what you use to connect with will determine the port (ie like Deckert said port 3389 for TS, but VNC and PCAnywhere would be something else).

In terms of programs if you are both using XP then Remote desktop (also known as Terminal Services) comes with XP and is very good speed wise. Compared to PCAnywhere the only missing part is file transfer options, but is faster and intergrates better.
Otherwise for a platform-less solution there is VNC. There are many VNC programs out, not just RealVNC. My personal favorite is TightVNC. The latest beta one, which is very stable, is blindingly fast.
PCAnywhere IMHO is a POS, besides the file transfer there is no reason to use it.

Oh, here is a link to a slashdot article about differences in VNC software available

thanks dfantom! good info! And I agree about pcanywhere...but the reason i do like it is because of the file transfer utility. Other than that, I could take it or leave it. I wouldn't mind controling it via Terminal Services..but I believe she would not be able to see any movement on her end then. And I want this to be an educational tool also. (tired of saying right click, right click, RIGHT click, lol) I will definitely check out tightvnc.

To setup port forwarding...Can anyone give me the process for the marconi adsl ethernet modem? I am going to have to walk her thru it..and i like my hair. So, if any one can give me a quick walk thru the interface I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

FYI,

dont no if this is too late now, but here goes:

To do port forwarding on a POTS (marconi) router:

Configure the entries under "Basic Config" | "PAT" in the menu option. You would want to use ATM1 interface, service name could be anything, port number 80 (for example), server port 80 (for example), and then the server ip address of the pc you wish to connect to (her pc ip) (192.168.10.1 for example).

And thats it, Add, save, save, restart, woala!

(please note that you need to find out what port you want to forward.....)

the only reason why everyone has marconi routers is because they are free on dsl contracts.
