Hi All,

Except for the obvious evil of supporting Telskum ... is there any other reason NOT to use them for the ISP. That is if I use the std 3Gb package ...

My poit here would be that if u have uphill .. rather have once contact point for both tthe line and ISP. As if u don't use the telkom ISP the telkom techies will send u to your ISP and the ISP will tell you that the line does not terminate at their offices and u buggered ...

So even though Telkom support sucks it's still a bit better then using an outside ISP ...

Yes / No /Maybe ??

no but reality is that telkom always refer you to the ISP even if it is telkom you will have this problem and been the ball in a game of telkom telephone pinball aint fun ...

at least with a non telkom ISP you can escalate and speak to management and or get them to deal with telkom and stop the buck passing ...

simple if modem not sync telkom anything else ISP ...

ok .. but don't ISPs control what u u/l , d/l in some way ... or restrict it ...
What is the purpose of using an ISP which resells the telkom stuff if (the std 3GB package) if there is no real value that they can add to it ?

i support other ISP's as they get money for it and telkom gets less than if you go to them directly there is no other difference ... mweb does allow access to there online content ...

I had the same line of thinking as you BlobNow. I thought by using Telkom as my ISP it would actually make life easier, but it really doesn't. Unfortunately Telkom Internet is like a different company, so it really doesn't matter which ISP you use. My decision in the end was based on pricing. Although I had no wish to support Telkom in any way, I could not justify spending approx R100 more to use someone like Mweb or Tiscali. Check out http://www.hellkom.co.za/ for a list of ADSL service providers.

Ok but to repeat my question .. do the other ISPs controll what u dl / ul ... or do they care as much as telkom does ?

Your ISP doesn't control the content you upload/download, but there is port shaping (which affects things like P2P) and a 3GB cap (&*$#&^$#^) which is forced on us by telkom.

This question can't really be answered other than with a 'maybe', because of the potential impact of liberalisation. If you can afford it, go with a non-Telkrap provider. Methinx there's going to be a plethora of cost-effective(?!) services from providers, come 01 Feb. If bux are a problem, you really have no choice atm but to go with Telkrap...

The nice thing is that if I go on monthly .. I can use telskum till feb and then change later ...

Exactly. That is the reason we stongly suggested you not take the 24 month contract. As I said, as soon as we have a reliable alternative, most of us are going to change over. Telkom are going to have to come up with some really incredible special offers to tempt us to stay with them. And as discussed before, a lot of us are going to leave Telkom just out of principle.

I've not had any problems as such with Telkom and have been with them for a number of years now.

However, due to the price drop in packages from other ISPs, Telkom is the most expensive ISP. Today, I emailed Telkom to cancel my data package (keeping my ADSL line with them) and plan to sign up with Afrihost next month if Telkom doesn't screw up my cancellation.

A lot can happen in 12 years.
