Using the 'internet' APN..

I have recently started using a BB9000 and my BIS will only kick in on 1 November.

My question:

How do I use the normal 'internet' APN for the next 4 days? I have WiFi at home so I'd like to use that when available.

I tried going into Advance Settings -> TCP/IP and Enabling APN to internet but this didn't work.

Basically I just want to use GoogleTalk and Facebook for now..

Most of the apps require bis or bes. Unfortunetly you will have to wait till the 1st for it to kick in.

A BlackBerry without BIS is like a car without petrol, which is why there is such a huge outcry when there is a BIS outage.

You can try going to Menu > Manage Connections > WIFI Settings and setup there but you will only be able to setup Browsing not email.

So what happens when I go overseas and use a PAYG sim? Do I still use my local BIS Service Book? How pathetic.... Don't understand why I cannot just use the normal internet APN and I am forced to use the BIS service for some apps. I can only use GMail.app and the Browser at the moment.

While I am still on this topic, could someone pls clarify the lower case 'gprs' letters and the 'greyed' out WiFi logo. Does this mean its connecting via WiFi but not thru BIS? What will happen when my BIS kicks in?

Lower case means you not active on the blackberry network yet. The moment it goes capital the sim as been activated on blackberry apn.

Greyed out wifi logo means you not connected to a wifi network, but wifi is active. Should display normal once the connection is active to a wifi network.


Yes you will use your local service books and as long as the sim supports roaming it will work overseas in some countries that has blackberry services.
