I thought of creating a Virtual Hard Disk in Virtual PC and then copying files to that, saving state ect. Moving the Virtual Hard Disk to DVD or other backup media.

The reason for this is that a virtual hard drive size of say 80GB is compressed to about 20GB on the local PC and it is a fixed size.

Has anyone ever tried this and do you think it can work?

Mmm, not very efficient. What about getting software to just compress your backup for you?

Agreed with this, it's easier and more redundant. Unfortunately it will cost for a decent backup program that can do this, unless you can find a free alternative.

You know that the size of the 20Gig will change as you fill it up with data?

There is just no way that 80 gig of mixed data esp binaries will fit in 20 gig. Oh and DVD's is way to small for that anyway. Also to add, CD's life span depend on quality and can be 2 to 10 years depending on storage conditions.

Like other said. Just place it in zip's
