My UTD - I live about 500m from the Uunet BS - has started playing games on me.

It runs OK for an hours then suddenly the signal disappears and the green led goes red. Stays like that for a minute or so and then it comes back as if nothing happened. Not for long, though.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have not seen up time more than 1hr.

I have not changed anything on my side - I have had the same settings for at least a year.

Does anyone else in the Morningside area (Uunet BS) experience this?

I am trying to figure if the BS is dropping the signal or if they somehow programmed my UTD over the air with rubbish code and now my UTD drops the signal.

On the iBurst site they say the BS is 100% - can I trust this?

Any advise will be appreciated.

You can usually trust the site to a degree, if it has been dropping for a week something would have been on the site by now.

This sounds like basestation hopping doesnt it? Are there other BS's around your area that also get a strong signal?

Im shure more of the JHB guys here will be able to help you with this.

I agree with Ekhaatvensters, it does seem to be BS hopping.

Use uTracestar or Eyeburst software and see which basestations have strong signals around you. Although Uunet is closest, it may necessarily be your strongest signal.

Sometimes if basestations are tossing you around between them, they occasionally miss, and you get tossed to some distant or ghost basestation. That's when your signal drops. This normally only happens if one or more basestations have similar signal strength.

To solve the problem, you may have to use a directional antenna to focus on your nearest or strongest BS.

Thank you for the replies.

I have the UTD connected to a Netgear router, so can not use those apps - is there some other way to do that?

I am surprised though - I always thought that UUNET is the only BS that I use, as I am in direct line of sight to it, and I always have had 100% signal with 950kbps+ transfer rate all of the time. Looking at the map at iBurst, the other stations look too remote.

And why would this problem start suddenly now - did they launched a new BS in the vicinity over the last couple of weeks that would cause this phenomena?

Also, can I upgrade the firmware or something with one that deals with this problem better?

Thanks guys.

You can bypass your router and plug the modem into a PC network card while testing.

I think if you are in direct line of site, and there is no other BSs around, there may be a fault on the tower. A call to the helpdesk may be the answer. If the signal is dropping every minute, it shouldn't be too difficult for a techie to find the problem.

You can try the incident report on thier site to see if anythign was going wrong with the tower.

Or do like Gatecrasher said and just plug the modem into your PC with ethernet or USB just to use the programs.
But it doesnt sound like you should have a hopping problem.

There is only a firmware that was updated last in October last year, so if you have nt updated to that, then you could try that firware update out, might help.
