The deputy mayor of the uThukela district municipality has been killed, KwaZulu-Natal's Co-operative Governance Department said on Sunday.
Bheki Mazibuko was stabbed to death in Bergville and details surrounding his death was still sketchy, department spokesman Lennox Mabaso said in a statement.
The province's co-operative governance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube urged police to investigate the circumstances of the incident and take "concomitant action" against the perpetrators.
Provincial police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that a case of murder was being investigated by Bergville police after a man was stabbed to death on Saturday morning.
Naicker, however, could not confirm the identity of the deceased.
"The incident took place in the Langkloof area at 2am on Saturday. The victim was stabbed in the neck," he said.
"Two suspects were arrested today [Sunday] for the murder. They are aged 25 and 26."
Naicker said one of the men was found in possession of a knife, suspected to be the murder weapon.
Police suspect an argument led to the killing.
The two are due to appear in the Bergville Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Dube-Ncube sent her condolences to Mazibuko's family and the municipality.
"The death of a councillor who is an elected servant of the people leaves a gaping void in the sphere of local government and this death has robbed us of one more foot soldier in our fight against poverty, inequality and unemployment," she said.
