Earlier this year I purchased a Nokia 5800 Xpress Music phone from Vodacom shop in Table View in the Western Cape. From day one I got the phone the screen was giving me problems.
Finally I managed to take it in to Vodacare Outlet in GreenPoint in Cape Town. After I booked it in the person behind the counter told me about the turn around times it might take if they going to repair it.
I left and got some sms’s accordingly about the progress of the phone. About ten days after I got a call that I can fetch the phone.
When I collected the phone and asked what was done on the phone the person helping me could not tell me. I took the phone and left. Over that weekend I restored my phone with the contacts and various applications I purchased previously for the phone.
When I tried to install some of these applications I discovered it failed to install because the IMEI number was not the same as the phone I sent in for repair. I also discovered that the swop out phone had the same problem as my previous phone. My screen was changing colours on its own and the phone speaker has a crackling noise. I tried to update my phone’s software via Nokia Suite software and it failed because the phone was network locked.
Monday, a forth night ago, I phoned the Vodacare Care Outlet in Greenpoint and asked to speak to the branch manager. A gentleman by the name of Imraan answered and listened to what I had to say. He told me he will come back later in that week with feedback. He also added he will ask for a sealed replacement unit to make up with the unfortunate incident I had with the replacement I received from them.
That was the last I heard from Imraan. I called several times and left various messages with his staff / colleagues for him but up till now, I had no response.
I am a businessman who owns an IT company in Paarl in the Western Cape. The reason I bought the Nokia 5800 out right cash and not on a contract was for the following.
• I needed a symbian operating system phone which can integrate with my office and home surveillance systems.
• It can be setup with my office vpn and exchange server.
• Purchase from a Vodacom Outlet because it comes with a 2 year warrantee and have ample service centers around.
As you can see the phone is a great part of my day to day function. I have been without proper operational phone now for 15 days. I felt my R6000.00 investment I made in a device which was suppose to make my life easier was a waste of time and money.
What makes it worse is that I left my faith in a man who could not find the time to answer or return my calls about this issue. The manager of one of the biggest Vodacare Services Centers in the Western Cape leads with no example. It also brings a thought to mind that Vodacom which is the biggest cellular company in our country choose these people with or without people skills when employment is offered.
I have reached my conclusion that I don’t want a nokia 5800 express phone anymore. I want my money reimbursed. I can rather search for an alternative brand which is not problematic than the Nokia 5800
