So as i am on a tight budget, i insured my Opel Astra GTC 2006 for a premium of R660 a month(i can't afford a premium of 1.5k a month, i'm 21) and an excess of R3000

So basically how it works is that they place a tracker in your car and monitor your driving from there, so the more reckless you are as a driver, the more you speed and the harder you break etc. the higher your premium becomes, so basically to remain a low risk driver you got to travel a max of 500km a week, avoid driving between the hours of 23:00-4:00 (this has its downfall for the nightlife but the lady told me if its once a week it is fine), avoiding backroads and dangerzones, apparently the trackers warns you about this all, we will se once i get it installed, so yes it does suck in a way, but if you on a tight budget i would say it sounds like a good deal until you can afford something better at a later stage, sucks having a fast car but you gota keep to the limits, but on the other hand its actually a good concept, because there are honest drivers below the age of 25 that must suffer with high premiums because of the ones that are speedies, also i think she said that everytime you faill out of the one bracket because of your bad driving habbit your premium increases by 40%, theres a green, orange and then red group, you start off in the green group for a 2-3 month trial where they monitor your driving and work out an average from there.

Sorry for the long explanation but just thought it might be uselful to people out there that are struggling to find cheap insurance cause of their age, this i would say is a good option if you are willing to obide by the rules, its sucks but ya, but i will post feedback on them once everything is installed. Anyone else that has any information on them please pitch in.

Sounds good in theory but the practical application was crap. I was in the "green zone" for 10 months, and then suddenly (with no driving behaviour change from my side) they decided that I "drive in high risk areas" on my way to and from work, and also that I drive to and from work "during peak periods" (no **** Sherlock), and so I was moved into the "orange zone", with the increase in premiums that that entails. I told them to shove it and cancelled.

The funniest part is that I since got a broker and my premiums are now less than when I was with uturn and now I don't have big brother telling me when and how to drive. If you're desperate then I suppose they're useful, otherwise avoid.

Make a U-Turn, Quick, find another insurer! I smell a rat!

In short: If they're going to force you to drive like you own an uno ... you might as well get an uno.

Get a broker. Enjoy your car. You're under 25 though, don't expect miracles. If you still can't afford it, flog the car, 2006 is not a bad model to trade in for something modest.

Find a decent insurer, and use a broker..

All that crap about when and where you can drive to be in the "green zone".. is complete bollocks...

Well you know like I said, it's not exactly what I want but you gotta go for what you can afford, it's more of a temporary thing than anything else, first time buying a car and it's an expensive process, yes I don't like the idea of the whole big brother thing, the car was a good deal so I made a rush for it and took what I could get and afford, post was just to enlighten some people as it is hard coming across information sometimes, and I mean mybb is the best place, I mean probably got the best advice from this site than anything else, just trying to make a contribution.

Get hold of a broker like Alexander Forbes....

I'm guessing you spoke to Discovery and they quoted you R1500pm for the insurance...

Agreed 100% with the emphasised part.

I think they draw you in with the low premiums knowing full well that it's only a matter of time before they find reasons to move you into a higher risk category, and then hit you with the increase. In my case they had to get inventive though, it only took them 10 months.

thing is even at the orange zone im getting a better premium, its at the red zone when its the same, but i mean ya its all about sales and gettin clients

You will be in the red zone in under 6 months.. its almost a guarantee....

Trust me on this one, ignore all the adverts about "cut out the middle man" and that BS... phone a broker and get a quote BEFORE you get tied into this UTurn BS...

Imagine another car/driver veering in your path force you to brake hard, red zone eminent? What a farce.

Yes I get what you guys are saying, but like I say, I think it's a good temporary option just to get the car off the floor, after that I will more time to shop around, I don't expect to stay with them long term

You sound like you are trying to convince yourself that this is a good option.

Where are you based?

I was with outsurance, charging me R900 for my Corsa 1.8 GSi, went to my financial broker and he hooked me up with Santam charging me R610 for the car and R100k household insurance.

Best you shop around sooner than later. The last thing you want is a company that has issues paying out. 2 months after i insured my 1st car I rolled it, luckily I was with a decent company that had no issues paying.

If they install a tracker device I doubt that will let you cancel any time soon. First make 100% sure about all the pitfalls and TOC.

I am based in Vanderbijlpark, will find out about all the t's and c's tomorrow morning

Phone this number tomorrow and get a quote... : 0860 111 234

My guess is it will be relatively close to what you'll pay this UTurn bunch of clowns.. and it won't have any of this tracker nonsense and where and when you can/can't drive.

I agree get conventional insurance through a broker -

While it is still available, IMO all insurers are heading the driver based risk/premium management/assesment route. In SA this is probably the only way to manage the lawlessness and recklessness (spelling I know)

Glad to see brokers are getting their dues these days.

+1 on using a broker.

I shopped around every time I needed extra insurance and my brokers came in lowest everytime.

2 cars- Santam
Household- Santam
2 x Life insurance- Momentum
