Anyone else getting heavy packet loss on the UUNet network?

It is on both our diginet and ADSL lines it seems.

no packet loss, just seriously slow ping times

Is UUNET oversubscribing their bandwidth? Quite a lot of people have cited terrible pings.. does Skype work over UUNET?

I spoke to a uunet sales droid and she said they have a 34m ATM link to SAIX for DSL traffic and this link is pretty full so theyve frozen the application for new dsl accounts. she didnt mention if it would be upgraded or not. problem is if they over subscribe to dsl kiddies us diginet guys are gonna suffer (and we're the ones who actually pay for the bandwidth).

I think at this point in time, bandwidth wise theyre still in the green :)

Yes Paket loss since yesterday and very high pings. According to the maintenance site of UUNET they expieriencing a DDoS Attack at the moment.

Skype is working just fine at the mo.

wierd.. just got told it was my workstation that was being packeted..

This is a reliable source at UUNET who allways help me fast and effectively :-)

Hi Neill

Sorry for not replying any sooner to you . I've been on leave . Our
Network Architects have acknowledged ( FINALLY !!) that the currently
setup DSL links dont have the capacity to handle . An upgrade , and
installation of an extra link is going to be done over the weekend to
alleviate traffic . I will keep you posted , if I hear of any changes to
this process.

Regards

Dhiran

@Clipse - Nice 1. It will be interesting to hear what improvements have been made.

It wasnt anything to do with ADSL specifically - I actually spoke with a UUNet technician shortly after posting and it appears that there were intermittent issues with their entire network (our ADSL and diginet lines were effected). This was resolved after about 30 minutes.

On a side note I personally utilise UUNet Uncapped ADSL from home every day and the speeds are great - I am able to get full speeds at almost anytime. Due to the constant battle of line upgrades VS new subscribers though the lines are reaching their limit, this is the reason why UUNet has requested that all resellers of their uncapped adsl service cease the addition of new users until further notice.

Doesnt that put their resellers in a very difficult place as far as proffits go?
I cant see that it would affect their existing client base so I expect profits will just level out for a bit until the situation improves and they can return to signing people up. I'd also assume they'd prefer this scenario to losing existing customers. AFAIK once the average customer is signed and in the system there is little more for the reseller to do than collect the coin and deal with the occasional customer.

BTW - I in no way intended to demean the role of the reseller - for many users the reseller offers technical and informational aid that would otherwise not be available to them. That being said however - if I was given the choice of paying less and dealing directly with uunet I would.

*sniff* smells like bs to me..soz but it looks like bs, smells like bs it must be bs.
Agreed it effected not on the ADSL group but the whole network, but it last a lot longer than 30 min, try closer to 11 hours

And you know where I got that, not from the nameless techy, no...from the network notice posted on the site
http://www.uunet.co.za/_service/networknotices/default.asp?txtAction=D&id=1454

the DDoS attack actually lasted nearly 2days(48hrs) and a bit more. Was a problem on all first tier networks actually, not so uunet specific.

Still slow

Well i noticed UUNET slowed down a week ago every day about after 08H00. I am getting 154 kbps intl. now. The only thing that is fast is this site :-)

Anyone else have this effect ?
