Hi Guys

Just to keep you in the loop on things I have been running a test account with UUnet's uncapped service, never heard of it, well neither did I till a friend told me. Anyway this is what I have learned so far:
1. It's unshapped as far as I can tell(337ms to google)
2. Local bandwidth is around 43-47KB/s(on my 384 thats pritty good)
3. It looks like it's capped per thread at 128k so if you run multiple downloads you get 400kbit/s(this is just a guess since I've only had the account for 2 days)
4. pings to local site saix.net is slower , 50ms to saix.net from DBN

Okay anything else you want to know just ask.
As for the pricing here goes:
1. You have to purchase a "Realm" not sure what this does but it sounds like a VLan so that the exchange takes you to the UUnet backbone.
Cost: R220 excl. vat

2. The actual uncapped account.
Cost: R560 excl. vat

Total R780 excl. vat
R889.20 incl. vat

I hope this opens a new door to some of you. Try a test account first to see if it's for you. I have to admit it doesn't feel as fast as Saix accounts but with no cap and no port shaping you can play MMORPG's and other international games. :)

I also forgot to mention that in every realm you can connect up to 10 people with their own accounts, so if you had a group of Friends you could split the R240 odd between you and just pay the R600 for the account.

Unfortunately no link as for the number I called this one:

Guys I don't know if it's on any web page this is just what I have done with the test account. So far it's a good service and I plan to get it :)

phoned them, spoke to ryan. friendly dewd. THey currently only running in KZN. lewking to start in cpt next month. all of the above info was confirmed, the only thing that was unclear at first to me, was the realm payment, is not a once off, but a monthly payment. Its costly, but if the services is a good one. Then hell, 40k/s 24/7 no limits no telkom crap! it almost seems worth it.

Well they've been testing them very thoroughly for us have those UUNET boys. And they are completely unshaped, I just watched some torrents fly down @ 50k/s .

Hellhound, are you using this service in Durban? If so where exactly? Also how do you connect to this service, wired or wireless, etc...?

Thanks,

Hi all

I too have been chatting to Ryan ;)

My understanding of the realm/account story is as follows:

The realm is used in authentication on DSL connections onto the UUNET network, hence the monthly charge. The cool thing is that you can put as many bandwidth accounts as you want onto the realm.
Sooo, if one of us were to get a realm, everyone else could sign up for an account on the realm provided they share the realm cost equally.

In my case, myself and a few friends may get a realm between us, and then get an account each. That way besides the R560exvat per account, we each pay R220exVAT/no.of friends :)

A few other things I have confirmed:

-NO SHAPING whatsoever
-NO CAP whatsoever
-NO contention from UUNET's side!! <-- This one I have to wonder about...maybe Ryan misunderstood my question about this one.
-12 month contract...not sure if it applies to the realm or the account.
-No mail/Value add services. The package is purely a data line. Of course who really needs mailboxes when Gmail is so good already ;)
-512K account is the only option at present. I have pressed Ryan to see if it is possible for UUNET to introduce a cheaper 384K option for those of us with DSL384. To me this should would really put UUNET's offering 'over the top'!

Is this a proxy service or what? Do you still need an initial telkom account and vpn through to UUnet? If this is the case Telkom is still in control and will screw the public over eventually!

Just shows you - if Telkom drops the stupid line rental charge for adsl, we can all have uncapped service for the same or less than what we currently pay

This is not a proxy/VPN offering. Your Telscum DSL connection is switched over to the UUNET network at the DSLAM on the exchange. This means you are on the UUNET network from hop 1 :). It also means your bandwidth is completely under UUNET control :)

So, you still pay line rental, but don't need a separate account? Other than the realm thingy and the monthly R580 that is?

Yep.
Line rental is still Telkom
ISP portion is UUNet.

The realm allows up to 10 accounts to piggy back off it. Sooo, if anyone in KZN is keen for this, let me know - we can share the realm cost.
If we get 10 accounts together on one realm, it'll be R22.4 + VAT :D

This is my maths for the whole uncapped, unshaped ADSL shebang (assuming 10 guys sharing realm):

THE FIGURES BELOW INCLUDE VAT!!! Other posts are mainly VAT exclusive.

Telscum Residential Line: R85
DSL384 Line Rental: R450
UUNet Realm: R26
UUNet 512K Account: R640

Total: R1200

Its still hellishly expensive. But if you plan on sharing the connection with 2 other guys via WiFi...then its a whole lot more promising :)

I suggest anyone who calls Ryan at UUNet asks when they will be launching a cheaper 384K uncapped offering.
I have already pestered him about this, and he assured me it will be escalated internally...

Even if I did move to Durb-mania or CT in near future, the killer is still the "DSL384 Line Rental: R450", IMO R751 for uncapped & unshaped is as good as it could get, but that R450 to telskum curdles into sour lumps.

<added>
R85 + R450 + R26 + R640 == R1201
R1201 - R450 == R751
</added>

And they charge R250 for authentication ... jeez ... what a bunch of balony.

WTF next ... is Telkom going to charge us for PPPoE connections as well since it is a realm ????.

It seems to me like smoke and mirrors ... hiding the true cost of their service.
