Hi there

Does anyone else experience that the ADSL offering from UUNET is SLOW.
Andre from UNET explained that Bittornet is the problem, but why does telkom and Internet Solutions not have the same problem??

This is frustrating..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot believe that a 1 st Tier ISP get's away with it.

But then again, this is Africa.

UUNET Please SORT out YOUR network !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm... have to be honest, from what I've seen posted around here, I don't know why anyone would even bother, especially now with axxess around, which seems to be getting rave reviews from users on this site..

Bittorrent is a program that utilises your full bandwidth capacity to distribute a file to multiple users. It is so efficient at doing this that ISP's without sufficient bandwidth are caught out verry quicky when users start complaining about slow speeds. The slow speeds are as a direct result of a couple of users utilising their allocated bandwidth 100% (In both directions).

can someone tell me what bittornet is

Bittorrent is another file sharing network. It works on a ratio system, the faster you upload, the faster you can download, so it completely maxes out your connection up and down.

Details here

yup and uncapped means full throttle.

yea if uunet dont do something soon they gonna be in huge trouble it
seems

most linux distros etc use bitorrent for distribution, as it allows far faster file dissemination than http/ftp. although http and ftp are still used.

the cool thing about it is that even if you have say the first 1mb of a file - people can already start getting the file from you, as you download it. this makes it a really fast way to spread new software releases.

as stoke mentioned - its tends to cripple isps networks, and (im guessing) 95% of people use it for pirated software, rather than legitimate stuff. obviously this means they have very little motivation to allow its use, so it gets shaped.

Many games, such as WoW, are now using Bittorrent to update their software, too. This relieves alot of stress off their servers.

I dunno, but I am not experiencing UUNET as slow atm. Got my favourite anime episode at 50k/s. Yes Bitorrent gets shaped now, and thats they way it should stay. If that is what you referred to as slow, yes it is slow to download with bitorrent on uunet. Using old school methods always work.

Well I must say UUNet works extremely well for me, full speed downloads on everything from HTTP to Bittorrent to eDonkey! It really is Great! My only complaint is about the pings that are totally useless. 600ms to local servers during the day!! So for anyone who downloads a lot and want to play games at night and during the weekend this is the best option. R718.20 a month for uncapped vs R600 for 30GB from Axxess. My traffic so far this month sits at 60GB and I am on 384k. A friend of mine has AYCE, as far as I know this and Axxess 30GB are the same. They are great but only for 30GB. I am staying with UUNET but I hope they can fix the pings during the day soon. 600ms local is just crazy!

1st tier?

The only 1st tier isp is telkom as far as i know - they own sat3. Satellite - well that would be government and Telkom , since government own Sentech and telkom do their (own) thing? Well... they call them 1st tier, but...

i would rather have 30 gig with great pings all the time then uncapped and crappy pings but im a gamer if you dont game then uunet is for you

So no, its not just UUNET

O/T

Stoke, I see you play on the -=SGS=- servers now..very nice that more members are coming on ;). How are u doing? Are u rising like a nuclear missile or going down as fast as a electric drill :D?

P.S: I use to play on the BF1942 servers but it uses up my cap...only next April will I get the Axxess account unless I can squeeze a deal with Tiscali and not pay the remainder of the 2 year contract.

OK international ping sstill bout 100-150ms higher with 25% packetloss on normal 3gig shaped (not good news for the average users) and they report the link has been restored (typical telkom)

On the flipside, I dont know whats going on with uunet, since this morning to now it has gone down hill, I have nothing good to say right now and everyone know how I would praise them. This is a serious issue, and needs to be resolved, this is no fun nemore.

Right now I have to agree... 2 days ago pings to international sites like google were between 310ms-400ms after hours, last night it never dropped below 700ms and in my opinion that is terrible. At the least I expect 500ms from them. Don't know what broke or why it broke, but fix it.
