So was having a discussion with a buddy and we were discussing the difference and perhaps which is better.

I like to hear from people here that had first hand experience which do you prefer and why?

We all know that V6 were created to overcome the packaging issues , the better V,s are a 8 or 12 but 6 fitted in places were straight 6 or flat 6 couldnt fit.

Then there is the angle issue 60 or 90 degrees - 90 was the worse because you need a balancing shaft and 60 degrees you could got away with flying weights. The best angle would be 120 degree but then again if you going 120 why not 180 flat 6.

Strangely the first V6 was used by Lancia and it was fitted crossed mounted so it wasnt for packaging - maybe Lancia doing Lancia things

I have owned 4 6 cylinders in life so far
1991 Opel Rekord 380i V6
2016 Audi 3.0Tdi V6
1992 BMW 325i straight 6
2002 BMW 320I straight 6

Strangely the best 6 cylinder I drove was in my 2011 Eagle 9800i the cummins isx, there is something about 355kw and 2237NM of torque through a 18 speed Eaton Fuller - seeing thats not a daily driver i would leave that out of this :p - those that have driven a cummins would know those low revving high output engines are something else

Personally from experience each were very different in their own way - kinda had it own personalities. Still cant tell one better than the other, I mean I enjoyed each one different never wished for a straight 6 when i was driving a V or vice versa.

On the sound point a straight sounds better, personally I prefer the sound of the BMW S52 over the S54 , yes the S54 was an updated but somehow if you know you know the S52 did sound better. There is one exception to the V6 camp in terms of sound and thats the Alfa Busso, never heard a bad sounding Busso ever even with a bad exhaust system.

I am not even going to look into the BMW fan boys here pushing the straight 6 (blah blah more power .... which is a myth) over a V6 without owning a V6

I would like to hear from other petrol heads what your thoughts are.
