To replace the geyser or feed into the geyser ?
It feeds your existing geyser.

As a simple example, you would feed it 1 kW of power, it would then feed 4 kW to the geyser. The power saving is obvious. It's similar to how an aircon works...

Just to add, then you would not need a big inverter as you just took your biggest element out of the question. No need for so many panels as well as batteries to store energy for night time

+1 I hit spikes of 5kw and I'd have had (self induced) power outages if I hadn't have gone with the 8kw. (2 user household, with the occasional guests).

Yea, but the goal the OP mentions is money. If you want to save money you change your lifestyle.

If you keep a grid connection, the smart inverters like Sunsynk will blend grid to top it up. It does not cost much

Possible, depending on your usage. But in the bigger scheme of things, a R10k difference between 5 kW and 8 kW is not that much compared to the cost of other components in the system.

Apart from not having to monitor usage, I don't want to have to defend my decision to go solar to the wife, whenever she does something that might make it trip. When she's in the kitchen then everything needs to be on simultaneously...
