I have opted for a self install and is still waiting for Telkom to validate me.
I have tried their "getting started" software this weekend - which seemed to work, but only ended up connected to my ISP (WebAfrica) and be able to do DNS lookups - nothing else.
On calling Telkom they said the line is not active and needs to be validated before I can use it.
Problem is - checking my WebAfrica account yesterday I can see 32 Megs of uplink data transferred in two days!!! Is it possible that the failed validation attempts I tried this weekend (on Sat) generated 32Megs of data?

Yes it can if your router tries to connect every 5sec.
Do the maths :)

This seems to be my fault after all.
I was so happy to see the DSL light coming on on the router that I entered my WebAfrica account username and password instead of the default telkom one for validation.
So instead of telkom guest account providing the 32Meg, my isp account got billed.
O well, thats how you learn.
