I have a 16k sim card and am struggling to get EDGE flying - at most can pick up one or two channels and was wondering if it could be related to the sim. So is there any need to upgrade sim cards for hi-speed data - EDGE or soon 3G? I read something about 64k sims being advised for 3G.

Thanks

what handset do you have? it must be edge compliant and class 10 to get decent data speeds...

ok, first off, you need to install netmon :

Then tell me what BTS you are connecting to, and whether it is EGPRS enabled and how many TS (Time Slots) you are getting during a download. I will also need the signal strength.
I will try find out for you what Base Stations in your area have EDGE, and how many Time slots are provisioned for it (if you are in gauteng). If you also give me the general area that you live in, it will also help.

Secondly, the SIM card swap to 64k wont give you better response. Time slots are determined by the BTS and the device, not the SIM.

Cheers -

Thanks ScrnScrm.

A SIM upgrade is not necessary for EDGE and GPRS as they interchange seamlessly and is not a requirement for accessing MTN's 3G either.
