the steam concept is sheer brilliance which most people can't seem to understand,
1. it is a console and it isn't, as a console it's the most powerful on the market when compare to ps4 and xbox one, and as a pc it's great pc. the problem with pc's is the spec vary wildly so gamers have very different experiences and for those who know what a GPU is and does thats great but for others pc gaming is a confusing and expensive world. SteamPC's will help simplify what a gaming pc is.
they saying to developer this is the benchmark program for this and in a few years I can see steam releasing updated steambox specs as you would a next gen console.*
2. SteamOs , use it don't use it, the steambox will run windows if you like so you not missing out on not having a pc and windows haters will love it. SteamOS will likely run other games but you'll probably be getting the majority from steam so game developer will want to support Steam since they have a huge customer base and i doubt cross platform compatibility will be a major issue for long.
3.the Steam Controller, is their money maker , the box is built by 3rd party and the OS is free, but if the controller is as good as they say then i am playing my FPS and RTS games on my TV and this then is where steam start to compete with xbox and sony albeit not directly. plus if the controller is half as good as they say i can see sony and microsoft following suit and either making thier own versions of the controller or at least adding support for it on their systems at some point.
4. Steaming this is what i want to see, got my pc setup in my room and steaming a game to my tv that'll be perfect for when i want to play fifa with friends on the conch or simcity hunched over my pc with out having to move anything or have to pc's or console and pc.
I already us steams Big Picture i like it but having my pc plugged in to tv is not always great when you want to sit down and type out a few emails or get some work done.
Steam are making huge changes possible in the way we will game, but the thing is they also leaving it up to the user to do what's best for them.
*compare game graphics from when the PS3 was released and now, same hardware much better graphics, pc developers need to learn how make a game run better rather than just upping the specs and having a benchmark or standard hardware requirement for pc gaming will help.
but this is just my 5c's but I think Steam are on to something, they also not rushing anything they just letting things develop. I see big potential, and in a few years when 4k tv's are more common place steambox with be the one people turn to, remember the ps3's lifespan was 7yrs, so the ps4 may look a little dated in a few years.
