Valve reveals Steam Machine prototype hardware

the steam concept is sheer brilliance which most people can't seem to understand,

1. it is a console and it isn't, as a console it's the most powerful on the market when compare to ps4 and xbox one, and as a pc it's great pc. the problem with pc's is the spec vary wildly so gamers have very different experiences and for those who know what a GPU is and does thats great but for others pc gaming is a confusing and expensive world. SteamPC's will help simplify what a gaming pc is.
they saying to developer this is the benchmark program for this and in a few years I can see steam releasing updated steambox specs as you would a next gen console.*

2. SteamOs , use it don't use it, the steambox will run windows if you like so you not missing out on not having a pc and windows haters will love it. SteamOS will likely run other games but you'll probably be getting the majority from steam so game developer will want to support Steam since they have a huge customer base and i doubt cross platform compatibility will be a major issue for long.

3.the Steam Controller, is their money maker , the box is built by 3rd party and the OS is free, but if the controller is as good as they say then i am playing my FPS and RTS games on my TV and this then is where steam start to compete with xbox and sony albeit not directly. plus if the controller is half as good as they say i can see sony and microsoft following suit and either making thier own versions of the controller or at least adding support for it on their systems at some point.

4. Steaming this is what i want to see, got my pc setup in my room and steaming a game to my tv that'll be perfect for when i want to play fifa with friends on the conch or simcity hunched over my pc with out having to move anything or have to pc's or console and pc.
I already us steams Big Picture i like it but having my pc plugged in to tv is not always great when you want to sit down and type out a few emails or get some work done.

Steam are making huge changes possible in the way we will game, but the thing is they also leaving it up to the user to do what's best for them.

*compare game graphics from when the PS3 was released and now, same hardware much better graphics, pc developers need to learn how make a game run better rather than just upping the specs and having a benchmark or standard hardware requirement for pc gaming will help.

but this is just my 5c's but I think Steam are on to something, they also not rushing anything they just letting things develop. I see big potential, and in a few years when 4k tv's are more common place steambox with be the one people turn to, remember the ps3's lifespan was 7yrs, so the ps4 may look a little dated in a few years.

So why will someone with a mid-range gaming PC buy this instead of a PS4 or Xbox One(also bearing in mind the high end steam boxes will probably be more expensive than either), where he will have the opportunity to play real console exclusive titles? And also your argument doesn't make any sense whatsoever...Steam Machines will be upgradable AFAIK, so how can they be a standard benchmark? You said it yourself : "is the spec vary wildly ".

2. SteamOs , use it don't use it, the steambox will run windows if you like so you not missing out on not having a pc and windows haters will love it. So because steamOS is basically Steam big picture, it's not a replacement for Windows. It has no standard OS functions (file browser, image viewer etc). So I'll need to dualboot, and reboot everytime I want to play a game on steamOS. Please tell me why I would do this if I can just upgrade my GFX and use windows for everything, including the games I would have played on SteamOS?

..and it will be usable with any existing PC. Assuming they don't make it Linux exclusive.

You can get exactly that by building a PC with a small form factor, all by yourself. Once again...nothing new.

Once again, not making sense. Steam Machines already have different hardware specs, and is customizable...how can it be a PC benchmark?

you see you not looking at the whole thing.

So you got a mid-range pc great you can play games on it you don't need a steam box so you dont buy one then, buy a ps4 if you have the money and want the ps exclusive titles. it's an option not a prerequisite. it a lure for casual games who are over whelmed by the hardcore gamer market.
As for a standard benchmark their minimum pc that will be entry level, it'll set the standard for entry level pc gaming.

Windows cost money and does alot more than some people need espcailly if its just a gaming pc, but you see if you need windows you have it it's not going to change your life.
SteamOS in not just Big Picture, steamOS is an open source operation system - look how the kinetic for xbox was hacked and modded for use on the pc, watch you'll see apps for steamOS fill any function you'll need.

..and it will be usable with any existing PC. Assuming they don't make it Linux exclusive.

 That's not going to happen, plus they already said it would work on windows even without steam.

You can get exactly that by building a PC with a small form factor, all by yourself. Once again...nothing new.

You obviously have a gaming rig and possibly a PS3, and Skyrim on at least one of them.

But like it, don't like it,either way it's going to change things. Mark these words! MARK THEM! I say. :D :D
