Due to HSDPA being an extension of 3G-R99, the term Vanilla-3G (i.e. ordinary 3G) was coined to differentiate between the HSDPA extension to a 3G-R99 network and the 3G-R99 network prior to the implementation and rollout of HSDPA.

Technically Vanilla-3G should be Vanilla-3G-R99 as 3G on its own is ambiguous.
