VANS regulations will kill the SMME sector

with the cables being part of the Common Property of the complex. I guess that when it comes to Telecoms in this country you are stuck between a Rock and a Hard Place.
Perhaps my idea is illegal anyway, time to shoot the lawyer again.

In a company I worked for 2 years ago had a similar idea. The only way around the problem was to have each person own there own connection line (dialup, diginet and so on), which obviously only Telkom is legally allowed to provide. This is all under the current law.
Under the new law (forgotting the VANS issue) you could always legally use a wireless system (WiFi/WiMax) to connect all the townhouses up to a central location.

If SMME's in the IT environment have to apply for a VANS license, ICASA will need an army of knowledgable staff to admin and police the regulations.

They are planning to create regulations that won't be enforceable in practice.

My short term memory reminds me of an attempt to protect all against greedy pharmacists...

Hello,

On 20 January 2005 we gave oral representations on behalf of SMME's to ICASA regarding the proposed VANS regulatory framework. A short report can be found at the link below.

We believe that the SMME's in the sector are going to accommodated as a result of the input given.

We have also been invited to give a 30 minute presentation to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications during which we will be touching on the issues raised in our representations to ICASA. It is apparently open to the public so those in "Slaapstad" can attend.
