Varsity Cup final

Opinions on the ref???
He's a teacher at my school... and I need blackmail! lol

I went last night. It was a stuff up from the start. We bought 20 tickets for the grandstand via UCT rugby club which included a bus from UCT to Maties. Got there and they had sold too many tickets for the stand so there were no seats for us and a few hundred other fools who had paid. Managed to sit in one of the open stands. Close to 20 000 people pitched up.

UCT were winning with a few minutes left and had a 5m scrum from Maties line in a good scoring position when the ref pinged our prop for dropping the scrum. Next minute maties were on our line (in front of me). Our scrum and our 8th man and captain went up the blind side and got turned over. Maties scored and the final whistle went. We still outscored them 2 tries to 1 but our kicking was what lost us the game. Maties were very strong in the last 10 minutes.

Still an excellent achievement by UCT to make the final and I thought that Matt Turner (old Bishops Boy) was the best player on the field. Should make province in the near future.

Oh and Postman Pot you were ex Wynberg and there were a few old boys in the team, Marcello Samson on the wing and Craig Kleu on flank (although he was not in last nights squad) also a blond haired prop, cant remember his name, was part of the squad during the varsity cup but not in last nights team.

20k people, wow. It's crazy the final wasn't at Newlands!

Seen Sampson, haven't seen Kleu in previous matches - strange cause he's huge. Also know the Bishops boys - Haw and Turner.

It's great watching old mates playing on TV. :D

Just read about the white card system on Tank Lanning's blog. Very interesting - each team can challenge one of the ref's decisions in each half.

Yes, it however took too long for the TV ref to make a decision. Both UCT and Stellenbosch used a white card in the 2nd half. They need to look at the communication process as they all seemed a little confused. If they are allowed to only queery once per half it should not impact too much. The refs should not refer upstairs as much when teams go over the line as the defending team usually knows when a try has been scored and it would be up to them to challenge.

UCT were jobbed. Firstly, the time played was waaay beyond the 80 mins and there was a period where the game was on and the clock was not ticking (if the time shown on the TV was correct). Secondly, why would UCT collapse their own scrum on the Maties 5m line? Thirdly, that dangerous tackle called by the assist ref was lame. I support neither team but it seemed as if the officials were conspiring to give the game to the Maties. Useless officiating like this is turning me off rugby. It is hard to know what the ref is doing most of the time. Many calls can go either way.

Just the blackmail I was looking for!!!

Maties deserved to win.The white card system was introduced for call by the captains & not the coaches.Maties had a try disallowed because Ikeys captain called on the white card, but he had advice from his coaches from the sideline. The ref should never allowed that white card to be used
