Hi forum,

I need to block torrents and sites related to JD. What is the most cost effective method (free will be great! :) ) to implement? Have people downloading huge files and I need to block it say during business hours but open after hours. I currently use a ADSL router and set it up to block the usual mega upload, zippyshare, megafire websites, but I just realised there are tons of these sites out there.

Help please :P

Endian will block torrents. Install it as a gateway server. There is no way beyond installing an intelligent firewall.

Hi Ghoti. Let me give you more details. It's a small company running on Windows 2008 with about 15 users on the network. Do you have any windows based applications I could use that are not as complex and rigid as ISA? Are there any free alternatives or not so expensive software we can try?

Nope. I do not use MS windows for this type of function. Endian is very simple to use anyways. Its a web based system to manage it. Very easy.

I went ahead and re-tested a bunch of different Firewall/Gateway freeware ISOs to see which handles the cleanest and easiest for me,while Endian was on the list Zentyal won in the end as it was just a bit easier to install

Zentyal was unable to stop utorrent in my tests.

Hi All, thank you very much for your help. Will try the above options and see which one is applicable. Else we may have to settle for something heavy like ISA.

Cheapest would be a Mikrotik router and block this at layer 7.... plenty of how to guides on that...
ISA, now TMG, is a very "basic" firewall compared to Cisco ASA or Fortigate HW firewalls. Used ISA for 6+ years, not bad at all, especially for a small company but there are cheaper ways if you have a spare machine lying around, or just go with a Mikrotik router

With a spare machine the Endian route sounds like a good option. I particularly like the browser interface.
Mikrotik is also a good product but as you will find in other posts on this site it is not for the lay person to necessarily configure.
Some people will tell you the support is almost non existant.
Maybe do a bit more research on this forum for others experience of Mikrotik before spending the money.

If you only got 15 users just tell them not to do it, and if they do track them down and give them a klap. Seems pretty cheap and simple to me.

ISA has one problem that users will figure out easily. If you set a time to what is open to download torrents then then closed time for business hours. If a user keeps their machine logged on the "closed Business hours rule will not work" and they can continue downloading during working hours.
