Hey guys. I don't know if this is posted in the correct section.

I wanted to buy some items from Aliexpress and use the VCpay app to get make a virtual credit card to purchase the items. I wanted to find out what the current exchange rate is so I looked it up

x-rates.com = 11.6671
Nedbank = 11.661

Before making the purchase I called VCpay to find out what rate they would be using and the lady tells me firstly they don't support international payments and started arguing with me even though I used it before to buy items. I just cut the call after she kept arguing.

I made a small purchase of $0.14 and the rand amount was R1.66 which effectively gives a rate of R11,857142.
I find this strange because the exchange rate at the time was around R11,66.

I call back to query this with VCpay and the next call centre agent does not even know what an exchange rate is:wtf:

How did you manage an international purchase ? Currently they don't support it.

The banks add commission to the rate. That is why the bank rate will always be higher.

The rates on XE are not available to the consumer. You need to look at the bank selling rates.

You'll never get that 19c back, no matter how much you try.

Never use the middle rate. Always look at the buy/sell rates.
