Hi, All

Our VCR is on it's last legs, and I'm looking to replace it. My first thought would've been a DVD Recorder, but it seems they've been discontinued, as no-one I've spoken to has sold one for over two years (It would seem I skipped straight past that fad)! :O

I'm looking for a simple, standalone box that plugs into my TV antenna (analogue), which can handle adhoc and timed recordings. It can record on any medium - USB hard drive, flash drive, DVD, SD Card... it doesn't matter. I don't need to share those recordings, but we have over ten scheduled recordings set up on our VCR right now.

We don't have Dstv, and have no immediate plans to get it. I don't want to buy a whole HTPC. I just want something that can record TV. Even if someone knows where I can still get DVD recorders, that would do.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find such a device? Under R1000 would be nice; under R500 would be better! ;)

Any advice you guys can give would be highly appreciated!

Cheers
Nocturne

What on earth could there be that you need to record from a TV (sabc worst of all for that matter) :wtf:

a TV these days is just a device to watch your downloaded content on

Seriously? Isidingo Monday to Friday, Survivor, Till Death, and Rules of Engagement on Monday, The Vioce (ok that's done now) on Wednesday, On the Couch and Manhunt on Thursday, and Big Bang Theory and Noot for Noot (watched while we tape Isidingo) on Friday. Oh, and Ugle Betty on Sunday. ;) Did I leave anything it?

ACryan also have a DVR. Esquire stocked them at some point.

No, but we often get home really late from work, or decide at the drop of a hat to go out after work, so we have standing schedules to record all the programmes I just mentioned. I don't drive, so my wife picks me up at around 17:30, and then we begin the long trek from Rivonia to Germiston. :p

Thanks for the suggestions, mika100 and morkhans. I'll have a look. :)

WTF is wrong with you A.c Ryan is not the freaking answer to everything

 This forum thread is specifically about replacing one's outdated VCR or dvd-recorder neither
of which are easily obtainable. I am not looking for a microwave-oven or a fridge or other stuff.
If you have a better suggestion than to the model no. mentioned here which does not force one into a
R65/month pvr rental with Multichoice please feel free to share it with us all.

In particular I would like to know what viewers with a limited budget should purchase as a standalone
product if they -

1. Only want to record SABC 1/2/3 e-tv and M-Net's terrestrial signal (ie not a dstv subscriber)

2. Don't want to go the local pvr route with Multichoice because:
(a) You cannot transfer recorded content off a Multichoice pvr from any port ;
(b) If your monthly subscription lapses previously recorded content on the Multichoice
pvr becomes inaccessible.

3. Want to buy a hd-dvd-recorder but can't find any suitable dvd-recorder under R3k. :wtf:

4. Don't want to use a pc to record content with (lightning risk) - (eg.tv card or a USB-TV-stick)

I myself tried to purchase a LG dvd-recorder recently and was bluntly told by LG HQ that they
would not be bringing them in any longer due to complaints from the big-brother tv clan. They are
available in the UK though -

[http://www.lg.com/uk/blu-ray-dvd-players/lg-DRT389H-dvd-player]. Why not here then? It's £129.99.
[ 1080p Full HD Picture Quality / Super Multi Recording & Playback ]

Please phone LG HQ and ask their sales reps yourself, I'm not making this stuff up. If you can find
any dvd-recorder for under R2k please share it with us all - I don't care a hoot about the
DBV-T/DBV-T2 or analogue tuner standards - I really want to buy one extra for my folks - I searched
long and hard, and so have many others, without any luck.

[ Just put yourself in the shoes of someone that can't go the pvr-rental route but is rather willing to buy a
standalone unit once-off for time-shifting.] :erm:

I am therefore ordering a A.C.Ryan for myself and will hence leave you all in peace. The idea was
just to get something for myself in order to replace my own LG-dvd recorder, which I want to give to them since they are not nearly tech-savvy enough for setting up advanced functions on
any high-tech gadget [which will need HDD formatting & advanced EPG programming etc].
