Telkom sales dude just came by to entice me to switch to VDSL. The 20mbps package looks appealing, with the all in cost being 1.8k p/m, with uncapped data.

This would imply switching to Telkom as the ISP, and I don't know much about them. I know that recently they have moved to enforcing the FUP, which is not good news. :D

I do around 600GB/month, mostly streaming Hulu/Netflix during the day, and downloading stuff overnight. I am currently on WebAfrica Business Uncapped, primarily because streaming is priority.

Any info on Telkom ISP (and this particular account) you can share?

If it's not a premium uncapped account, there is no doubt Telkom will shape you once you hit a couple of hundred GB.

You gonna get FUP'd quite quickly if you use continous data daytime. Only way to not see that Titracker go towards green > orange > red is if you download during their night surfer hours [unlimited] from 12am - 6/7*am[7am only goes into effect 1st September]. Honestly i don't know how much you can do though :/. Just to add, ALL capped data is open wrt speeds so try some of the guys [maybe CrystalWeb launches by then :p].

As for taking the package, take the rental / line with them but keep your data packages open. Your rate should halve atleast :).

What a curious episode this is turning out to be. The Telkom dude came to see me on Saturday, just before I OP'd. I told him that I use around 800GB/month, and that I will be happy as long I don't get throttled before that. I told him that I would investigate, and he said he'd come again on Monday.

Monday the dude is here like he said he'd be. He said that he's investigated too, and they don't throttle on those packages unless you exceed 1TB. However, he does have to apply for "special permission" (sic.) but he is sure that it will be granted as they want to push the VDSL as much as possible. We agree that I would fill in the details (i.e. confirm that I am placing an order), however I will only give him the banking details once he confirms the "special permission".

Not a word from the dude since then. Towards the end of last week, I made contact with Telkom, explained the situation, and asked if they can locate the salesman (I was dumb and didn't take down his name or anything). They can't find him, never heard of him (I remember his first name is Thulane, but don't know the surname). I tell them the story, they confirm the deal and the rollout of VDSL in my area, but have never heard of "special permission" or anything similar, and will not commit to any throttling figures on TI.

Anyway, I am still interested in trying the thing, but what bothers me is the following: say I go ahead and upgrade to 20Mbps VDSL. I then discover that the TI uncapped package sucks ass, but don't want to shell out for the 20Mbps business uncapped on another ISP. Can I still go back to the 10Mbps business uncapped on another ISP, or do I *have* to use one of the VDSL accounts now (which are only 20 and 40)?

Had the same issue - got the Telkom call last week "We want to come through about our fibre installation" - turns out that the fibre-part was just the upgrade of the MSAN to enable VDSL (which was already available since April). They could not answer contention issues and capping, but to be honest, I rather stick with a Afrihost 10MB Business Uncapped - had excellent service and with all the kids in the complex on holiday this month, my guest Wifi maxed out at 1,4TB in August - I doubt that I will be able to do this with Telkom.

Snip.....

That is quite scary :wtf: but i do hope i get a call or visit in the future :D...

If you mean downgrade then i am sure you can and won't be forced however make sure that you get a modem that is ADSL2+ compatible & check if a downgrade fee applies [it does on going down from 20Mbps [ADSL2+ not VDSL?] > 10Mbps > 4Mbps > 2Mbps] so you understand what your bill will show. I haven't read anyone downgrading from a higher speed especially from going VDSL > ADSL2+ :p.

I completely stand corrected though :)
