VDSL Line speed not as expected - please assist

I upgraded to 20mb VDSL and needed a new router, also found that the profile on Telkom's side hadn't been changed to VDSL even though the customer service said it had.

Get hold of the Telkom social team​ on Twitter, they will help change the profile.

Can you log into the router and find the stats page? You're looking for an entry like G.992.5 or G.993.2
On that page there should also be an entry called Attenuation, SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) or a deviation of SNR such as Noise Ratio and current sync. Please post those as well.

I think you're syncing at about 14Mbps on ADSL2+.
 
No, You have to change the router to a VDSL router. An ADSL2+ or ADSL router will default to the capability of the router, making the line irrelevant.

If you use a VDSL router and you still only get the connection up as an ADSL 2+ connection then the profile is still wrong as most VDSL routers will default back to whatever the line supports and what the profile is set to.
 
Telkom did confirm that all in order on their side, i will have to test a VDSL router on the line and take it from there,

Depending on your line stats it may not be worth it, you should be getting about 16Mbps speedtests on ADSL2+ at 20Mbps. VDSL2+ is slightly better for higher attenuation, so if you'd have been getting about 14Mbps I would have still upgraded, not at the 10Mbps you're currently at.

After reporting a fault with Telkom, a Technician came out and explained that although the call centre tells you that you are
(in my case on a 20mps) VDSL line one must make sure it is not on a "Multi" on their side - he changed it to "VDSL Permanent" and i could immediately see the difference:

So the issue is with the profile and the lack of training and knowledge on the part of the call centre operators.

There are therefore three possible profile settings on a 20 Mbps ADSL service:

(1) ADSL2+, 20 Mbps (permanent)
(2) VDSL, 20 Mbps (permanent)
(3) VDSL, Multi, in which case the line will adapt to whatever router/modem you have connected to the line?

Not sure the technician's explanation is quite correct but it does illustrate the importance of being able to interrogate the call center operator and specify exactly what you want.
 
Your modem can't do VDSL so unless you now have a VDSL modem you're now on 20Mbps ADSL2+.

So unless he confirms he now has a VDSL modem and the right filter he is on 20Mbps ADSL2+.
