ZyXEL VMG8924 vs D-Link AC1750 vs AC1900 ASUS a68u

Hi Guys

I recently upgraded to 40mb/s VDSL , and started looking for decent performing VDSL router-modem combo/gateways.

I initially bought a huawei HG659 .........which turned out to be rubbish , so i decided to do more research and found this zxyel gateway

http://www.wootware.co.za/zyxel-vmg8924-b10a-dual-band-wireless-ac-n-adsl2-vdsl2-voip-combo-wan-gigabit-iad-router.html

which according to reviews is performing better than the much more expensive Asus ac68u.

See this interesting detailed comparative review between the 2.

For a R1700 gateway , I think this is good value.

Hi,

I also have the HG659. Can't get it working at all. The WAN light comes on and it syncs, but it won't connect to my ISP. It just says connecting all the time. Did you ever manage to get it working on VDSL?

Thanks

I use a Zyxel VMG-1312 as a modem for my Asus RT-N66U router (no built-in modem).

In this case the Zyxel has poor wifi while the Asus is good. So they work well together.

I was able to connect with the hg659 , but connection would drop up to 8 times a day. I would have to restart the router each time to get the connection back up. If I were you i would return / exchnage that unit for something else before its too late.

Hi,

How did you manage to get it to connect to VDSL? Mine show that the WAN is connected. But the Internet connection never comes up. It just says it can't connect to the ISP.

Thanks

Are you connecting your telephone line to the DSL port or the WAN port , the WAN port is only to be used for a fibre connection , connect to the dsl port and do a hard reset of the router , it will auto detect the adsl / vdsl profile after that.

I've tried...
- Telkom's Netgear VEVG2660 - Firmware is crippled. Avoid it!!
- Billion 8800NXL - VDSL modem is stable. WiFi is proving to be highly problematic. Range is poor. Erratic throughout on 20mbps line. Wired is rock solid. WiFi not. It's a 300mbps router and isn't capable of holding 18mbps throughput. Still trying to get something sorted out with Tarsus. The internal antenna is poor. Only 2DB.

If Tarsus / Billion don't sort it out soon I need to execute Plan B - the TP-Link VDSL or a standalone router connected to the Billion.

I have the a similar issue , i can get 38mb/s download via wired , and about 27mb/s over wifi on my laptop. My Ipad however manages about 30mb/s download speeds over wifi. That said i am not using the newer 1300mb/s 802.11ac protocol yet since my devices dont support it.

My wifi speed issues are purely a function of how limited my devices are in terms of their wireless connectivity.

My range on the zyxel 8924 is way better than the hg659 though in terms of range on the 2.4ghz band, i manage to get nearly full signal 20m away at the furthest point in the house.

The 5ghz band has quite bad range though , about 10m before the signal drops off completely.

So I swapped out the old telkom ADSL filters , I was using with VDSL filters and my net attainable rate increased by 10mb/s to 91Mb/s!
I thought the ADSL filters and VDSL filters were the same , guess i was wrong.

I know this is an old post but was hoping you could tell me how to do a hard reset on this router?

Hi,

Please can someone help me before I tear my eyeballs out, I have been trying to factory reset this router but every option I try I can not get it to reset, either I am doing something completely wrong or none of the default passwords I try are actually working:

Its a H659 Ver.B from Vox telecom.

I have tried holding the reset button in for 10 seconds...
Holding the button in while powering up the unit...
Hold the button in for 30 seconds...
Tried admin/admin... admin/password, user/HuaweiUser.... etc etc

Any help would be appreciated

Guess it is too late now, but I found that you have enable VLAN ID and set it to 835 for the internet connection to work.

I have the billion too and it's rock solid router for a 40mb vdsl. I have a ac68u, but problematic. When I do use it as a ppoe connection via the billion it randomly cuts my internet connection every now and then. I've flashed it to the new Merlin software, but problem persist. Maybe I just bought a melon.

I don't use a filter at all, maybe I should use it and see if it will improve my stats and maybe performance wise. Was also in the market for a better vdsl router, but the billion is good enough for now, only issue is the wireless.
