Hi

My mweb Fone router is faulty and looking for a new VDSL modem (40mb line). Also looking for one that I can configure to bypass chromecasts builtin dns settings

Was looking at the Zyxel VMG1312 Router, nice and cheap from web africa but is there a reason for that?

Takealot have a few Asus that are triple the price.

What would you guys suggest?

Thanks in advance

Takealot also have a cheapie at R719 last time I looked. You could try it , it does have a 30day money back guarantee.

DrayTek Routers w/ Firewall

Hi Frogstar, we'll be happy to assist with a DrayTek VDSL modem/router.
While our routers are nice, they aren't cheap - in performance or after-sales service.
That's why we prefer to market them as value-for-money, robust networking solutions.

Using the DrayTek routers' built-in object oriented firewall, it's easy to pick and choose which IPs to block, and to change settings on the fly.
Also, the built-in easy to configure DNS Forwarding feature allows one to forward only certain DNS queries, say for example you would like to route queries for *.netflix.com only through a particular 3rd party DNS server, but have your ISP resolve the rest of the queries.

Give a shout if you'd like more info regarding the DrayTek Vigor2760 series
It's our SoHo all-in-one DSL router series which comes in WiFi and non-WiFi variants.

how much?

also, what's' the UI like? I love Asus UI, but can't stand D-Link UI (why I am also looking for a vdsl router)

In regard to the UI, have a click around the Vigor2760 series Live Web Demo here, and get a feel for it.
The Conditional DNS Forwarding feature is found in the left-side menu under Applications.

In regard to pricing, PM the area you're in and I'll forward some reseller info.

I use a Zyxel SBG3300-N router and also have 40Mbps VDSL. R1.8k from Web Africa's website. The user interface sucks, but it is extremely reliable and never needs rebooting. I used to have Telkom fibre and it worked fine with that too, on account of the WAN port. Nice to have a router that can handle anything.

thanks Bryn, that's the info im looking for first hand experience

I got myself the ASUS DSL-DSL-AC52U from firsthop.co.za (much cheaper than takealot) I need a new router but VDSL hasn't been rolled out yet so can't comment on it's VDSL performance but it is still a really really good router in my experience. It syncs almost 2mb faster on ADSL compared to my old DLink and has VPN functionality built in and DNS settings. Wifi is also really good, it's better than a older model Ruckus AP I have. it cost me R1800.

Biggest con is only 1 USB port as it can do automatic switching to 3G if ADSL fails and I use it with an external hard drive for media sharing. Would be nice to have both at one time.
