Hi,

I've been told by a member on these forums that chances are good for my SNR to improve should I switch to VDSL (Currently on 10Mbps). My attenuation is fairly low with 3dB for upstream and 8.5dB for downstream.

I have an ADSL2+ router however and not a VDSL router so if Telkom were to change me to 20Mbps on the VDSL profile (Not ADSL2) would my router be able to sync or would I need to remain on the ADSL profile?

if they move you to VDSL your adsl 2+ router will not work, you will need to get a VDSL router.

Thanks. Thought so.

I believe I've read you can crossflash the TP-Link W8980 with the W9980's firmware to gain VDSL support as they run exactly the same hardware. I currently have the W8980. Has anyone attempted this and does it work?

Have done that on a Netgear with custom firmware. Do not see why it will not work with you too as VDSL is not hardware, it is a firmware change of detecting higher frequencies. Basically it will work. In fact, i use the custom flashed modem rather than another VDSL modem we own for the custom flash features on the firmware.

Thats a difficult one... I would go for a DGND3700v1 but i do not think they sell the v1 anymore.... only v2. Go for any router that you can set the SNR target or rather one that can be flashed with custom firmware that can allow you to set the SNR target such as Tomato or ddwrt firmware.

You dont need a vdsl router to get 20mbs , once you go above 20mbs you need a vdsl router.

I have a Netgear D6300 (adsl2+) router, currently running adsl 10Mbs line. And have upgraded to VDSL.

Does that mean I don't have to change my router to a vdsl router - I can just change to different firmware on the D6300 router to make it synch on vdsl?

thx

Completely depends on if you can find a VDSL compatible firmware. Does not look like I can find one though... Of course it is possible as the hardware is all the same. Just google VDSL custom firmware for D6300 and you may come across it.

Ok thanks. I have x3 D6300 routers, would hate to have to replace all 3
