Good Morning All,

I recently got my VDSL line installed at my home. While my exchange is 40mbps enabled my distribution box is currently capped at 20mbps.

On top of this my line is syncing at 15mbps.

I am perfectly happy with the service and the results have been pretty impressive.

I am currently getting more or less the following speeds:

Download 13-14 mbps
Upload 1 mbps
Local Latency 9ms

I have run the test on multiple days and the results are almost identical every time.

Now that you have the background I have the following questions:
1) I was originally told that I would require a vdsl modem. Unfortunately I had already purchased a Netgear D6300 which is not an ADSL modem. How is it therefore possible that my line is syncing?
2) Is there any point in getting a vdsl router? Is there any chance my upload speeds would change at all (Not that I really care)
3) My Router is ADSL 2+. Are we really getting VDSL or is it ADSL2+?

Im a little confused with why my setup is working and am hoping to encourage Telkom to upgrade the distribution box to 40mbps. I have no idea if my Router will work with a 40mbps line.

Any comments or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nitelee

You're not really getting VDSL. So I'm assuming the speed you are getting is the limitation of the ADSL 2+. Get a VDSL and you'll be able to get 40mbps (or 20mbps, depends what you paying for)

Sorry, I am not sure I understand your post. Are you saying that my line is syncing at 15mbps because of the ADSL2+ router and I should get a VDSL router to allow the line to sync at 20mbps (Which is what I am paying for)?

And my line is running 15mbps but its actually a ADSL connection and not a VDSL connection?

Yes. ADSL 2+ maxes out at about 15Mbps. Get VDSL modem and you'll sync at 20048Mpbs

For starters you need a VDSL router.
The other thing is that they need to change your profile to the VDSL profile not the ADSL2+ one.
Seen a few people syncing at 15mb even with a VDSL router until the profile was upgraded.

okay awesome. Thanks for the feedback. I arrange a vdsl router and post abck with my findings.

The techies can't really support VDSL, so they have this tendency to switch the line to 20Mbps ADSL2+.

Tell them to switch it to 20Mbps VDSL, but then you will need a VDSL modem.

They did the same to me.

That is why your line is only syncing on 15Mbps because you are on VDSL modulation and your router is adsl2+ or your profile is still ADSL2+ i bet your attenuation and signal to noise ratio (SNR) have gone to the dogs so yes its imperative that you have a VDSL router your upload should be atleast 3Mbps or 2Mbps once again to get these speeds you need a VDSL router.

Your exchange supports 40Mbps but so does the MSAN you are on they both can achieve upto 1Gbps with FTTH and about 50Mbps with copper to the home like it is now the only reason you may not be able to get 40Mbps is becuase of distance The max distance for VDSL 20mbps is about 1.6km, and for 40Mbps, the distance is about 800m, remember this is with last mile copper not Fibre. Find out exactly from your ISP or Telkom how far you are from the MSAN

I am running 20mbps ADSL2+ profile and going strong. dont know what you people on about. get about 18mbps through. Just keep logging the issue with telkom and will be sorted out after problem escalates enough.

I was also on 15mbps for a week or two and just kept on logging it and now syncing 20mbps fine. ADSL2+ at 20mbps is possible. wiki that sh*t. and just need a decent router to be able to handle it.

I have a tenda for ADSL 2+ in bridge mode to a Mikrotik 951i and works great.

as stated above techs dont support VDSL 100% yet. and 1,6km for 20mbps is true and 800m for 40mbps :) I am 980m from exchange and cant receive 40mbps. wish they had an inbetween like 30mbps cause that would be perfect.

Your upgrade to VDSL hasn't happened yet. There is a technical component that need to happen on your exchange. My adsl was running at 15 mb for like 3 weeks on my VDSL Pace modem. When the change happened I got a confirmation sms. My modem was setup to automatically detect vds/adsl so when I got home I was getting 20 mb. Call 10210 they will tell you your upgrade is not complete yet. If it was your existing adsl modem would not be connecting.

Ill give my ISP a shout a little later and see whats cutting. they were very quick to start billing me for VDSL.

Thanks for the response all, after some 3 hours on the phone and quoting all you guys my line is sorted. Im getting 20mbps\2mbps\9ms according to speedtest.net. Seems to be working really well. It seemed like the telkom verification was the biggest problem. Once the self install option was cleared my VDSL came up immediately.

Now for my next question. Telkom and Webafrica seem to think that I should be able to get 40mbps, so I am currently trying to apply.

I have linked my line stats below.
Downstream speed - 20476 kbps
Downstream SNR - 11 dB
Upstream SNR - 28.3 dB
Max downstream speed - 10240 kbps
Downstream attenuation - 13.2 dB
Upstream attenuation - 10.6 dB

I definately get my full speed according to speedtest.net

Do you think 40 is possible?

Not with those stats unfortunately. Did you get the VDSL modem or is that ADSL2+ still? I noticed when I was moved to the VDSL profile my line stats improved dramatically.

This is the current stats with the PACE VDSL modem. Out of interest sakes, what is the max downstream speed mean? I definately get faster than this atm which is why I ask?

The Pace modem allows both ADSL and VDSL, it's not clear from the stats you posted which modulation you are on.

There should be line in your stats which shows the modulation type.

If you're on VDSL it will say something like G.993.2 and if you're on ADSL it will say G.992.5. I'm not exactly sure if those are 100% correct, but VDSL will definitely start with G.993.

Unfortunately I am not doing this off the router but rather off webafricas interface so I am unable to tell you. I do believe that this is VDSL though. I will double check tonight when I get home.

Ok so wait my line syncs at 10240 my snr is 21 and my att is 7 could I sync on a 20meg with adsl2+? I dont feel like waisting 1500 on a vdsl router

Sounds doable, although Telkom is not very clear on what profiles they allow although it has been mentioned that there are some people doing this.

When I enquired about this a few months ago I was told that they will only allow 20Mbps+ on VDSL. Getting a straight answer from Telkom is near impossible though.
