So has Telkom stopped rolling out VDSL now in favor of LTE and Fiber?

Are Telkom still installing MSAN & ISAM units at all?

Telkom have been very quite on all fronts regarding VDSL, Only see things happening with LTE and Fiber.

No it has not been halted.

Different teams are doing the different installations. The only common issue is to provide a single fibre link to the MSAN/ISAM.

Rollouts of VDSL is still happening, it's just the press is focusing on Fiber.

At the end of the day, FTTH is delivered via MSAN and ISAM units so they have to continue to deploy those units and will convert them to GPON units as soon as Telkom mark the area as a FTTH area.

They are still rolling out MSAN units.
Just a while ago they put one down a few blocks near us.

Thought something will happen in EL a year ago already. Are they that slow ?

Thanks for the confirmations.

I thought Telkom would have replaced most of the old DSLAM and IMAX units in the exchanges by now, with MSAN's Units so those people who are close enough to the exchange could get VDSL.

My copper length to the IMAX is 300 meters, close enough for 40mbps VDSL.

Mind you, we are only a Bronze level exchange, so I guess our area is not financially viable to upgrade.

Oh well, Neotel coming next week, offered me a 100mbps Microwave link, holding thumbs here.

No point to roll out VDSL, the max limit is far too short to get 40meg

I'm also linked to an IMAX and my max rate is 12Mbps.

All the DSLAMs and IMAXs in every exchange will eventually be replaced, mainly due to technological obsolescence (no support, spare arts or software upgrades available from the OEMs). Financial viability does not feature in the longer term equation.

You will get connected to an MSAN/ISAM within the exchange building and at 300m you should get the full 40Mbps.

I Believe
800m is the max for 40mbps
1.5km is the max for 20mbps

at 300m i should be able to sync at 75mbps odd

Imax can support up to 20 the dslam configuration must be changed to adsl2 :)

The Huawei UA5000 config used by Telkom can handle 24Mbps (ADSL2+) but Telkom limits the product to 20Mbps.

That is the exact IMAX we have in our local exchange

And this unit can support VDSL2, so why are we still stuck on ADSL2+?

Currently, the income of the broadband service and the private line service is a key revenue
source for carriers and the income is increasing. The UA5000 supports ADSL2+ and VDSL2,
implementing the 100 Mbit/s access rate to the desktop; supports the binding of four-pair EFM
G.SHDSL ports, implementing the high-speed private line service of the enterprise; supports
GE and FE access, implementing the access services for enterprise and community users;
supports the IGMP V2/V3, implementing the smooth access of the IPTV, HDTV, and video
conference; supports the multicast virtual local area network (MVLAN), creating one-to-one
relationship between the MVLAN and the Internet service provider (ISP), and implementing
effective management over ISPs

Limited port capacity - 640 I think. It's also obsolete - Huawei don't manufacture them anymore, so they will have to be replaced soon. To convert to VDSL2 would require new modules, new backplane (mainboards), metro ethernet links, etc.

iirc there were also compatibility issues going forward in the NextGen network rollout.

So it was a case of maintain what they have but no new installs. All new installs are MSAN/ISAM units.

I remember when the IMAX here was still on ATM links and was so congested Telkom battled to get it on to ME due to spares, about 2 years ago. But it now has a gigabit ME link. Which brought latency down from 50ms to 8ms. I fought tooth and nail to get Telkom to fix it. I spent a whole year fighting and sending letters. I knew what was going all the time. Even ICASA got involved.
