VDSL SNR Margins

Also just got upgraded to 40Mb today.

Would suggest that SNRs and Attenuations reported by the various routers are a thumb suck at best.

Over the years I have had different SNR and Attenuation numbers for ADSL, ADSL2+ and VDSL routers / modems.

Today I had completely different numbers between ADSL2+ and VDSL profiles on the same router before and after the upgrade from ADSL2+ to VDSL.

Significant and inexplicable differences.

In essence, just order the service, and see if it works. If it is stable, good, but if it isn't, drop your speed. This will most likely be dependant on your distance from the exchange.

Thereafter overall speed will be determined by your chosen ISP.
 
ADSL and VDSL work on different signals using different frequencies, so your Attenuation and SNR will not be the same.

With commonly deployed ADSL over POTS (Annex A), the band from 26.075 kHz to 137.825 kHz is used for upstream communication, while 138 kHz – 1104 kHz is used for downstream communication. Under the usual DMT scheme, each of these is further divided into smaller frequency channels of 4.3125 kHz.

Second-generation systems (VDSL2; ITU-T G.993.2 approved in February 2006) use frequencies of up to 30 MHz to provide data rates exceeding 100 Mbit/s simultaneously in both the upstream and downstream directions.
 
It appears to be a major thumb suck as my attenuation is 23.7 dB. It would surely not be possible to sync at 40mb if that were really the case... However, it's interesting that both routers (Pace and ZyXEL) are showing the same figures.

My only concern is that the DSL connection light is staying orange on the ZyXEL. I'm not sure why..
