Vdsl stability question

Hey Guys,

I was hoping to get some insight into my vdsl line. I have lately been having loads of dropped connections especially when the weather is bad. Even if lightning is 20kms away my line starts to act up. My snr margin drops to about 6.4.

Will i get any more stability by dropping my line to a 20mb in order to increase the snr margin?

My line stats look decent but stability sucks.

Do you reckon I should keep bothering Telkom to fix the line or would dropping the speed help?

Any ideas are appreciated. I have attached line stats courtesy of my pace router.

[Added: I restarted the router again. The downstream power db number seems odd]

First things first, :)

1) Any crackle, hum or hiss on the line?

2) Have you tried with only the router connected to the line (no filters and no phones)?

3) Does you phone line cable at any point run past a wireless device (such as a Remote Blaster, Alarm Antenna, etc) or electric fence power unit?

Unfortunately i dont have another router to test but...i do have a new electric fence...the telkom pole runs right against it....reckon that could bevthe problem?

If so wha are the odds of getting telkom to move a pole :-)

Turned off my fence and no difference. There isnt any other interference i am aware of

Stats seem fine. You shouldn't be getting that many dropped connections at all. Log a call.

SNR down and up are fine, So is attenuation.

There should be no reason for the number of errors you are encountering, so log a fault.

Hey guys, I agree my line should be fine, I have test it for a while and am massively confused. My SNR sat at 13.3\13.4 for a week. After that it dropped down to 6.4 and line resynched at 30mbps.

Now for 3 days it only syncs at 30 odd and SNR Margin sits at 5.9-6.4.

Port resets help nada and do not change anything.

My line plugs directly into the modem, no handset. It does not appear to be interference either.

Any more ideas would be appreciated?

This is the response I got from my ISP (Who host my line). While I understand that equipment can cause disconnects, surely this is unlikely as the line is then resyncing at lower speeds? It has subsequently dropped to 25mbps.

I have gone ahead and investigated into this from my end and i do see that the customer is experiencing a intermittent connection.

Disconnection reason is PPP received a Terminate Request from remote end.

This means equipment keeps dropping the line. Process of elimination to determent what equipment is causing the connection to drop. Disconnect all equipment from the router. Including wireless printers, tablets cell phones, gaming devices etc.
Leave only the router connected for 30 minutes. If that is stable begin to add on 1 device every 30 minutes to see which devise is causing the disconnects. It can be a faulty network card on a PC, Trojan etc. You can download Super Anti Spyware( there is a free version available) , install it on all PC’s do an update and then a complete scan on the PC’s to remove viruses.

To help with the connection i have conducted a port reset on my end, please restart all devices and start testing.

Please check all splitter filters, surge protectors, dsl cable and router as well.

The lightning will cause EMI interference. So will rain clouds (contrary to people who think that it's because of rain getting into the equipment).

electromagnetic interference interference? :p

Okay so stupid question. What happens to your guys SNR Margins 2 days after EM Interference? Does it revert back to normal or does it stays low? The reason I ask is that mine seems to drop to roughly 6 (Which I would expect) but then it just stays there....forever...until someone does something....(Not a port reset or router restart)
