My car was stolen 3 weeks ago and my insurer has requested that I deregister it before they can pay out. Problem is the licensing dept say that eNatis has not been updated and vehicle status is 'Licensed'. Useless SAPS say it's not their problem since they've opened a case and given me the case number.

What should I do now? I need to buy a replacement car ASAP. Please help!

Who must update the status on the eNatis system, I thought the licensing department should do that, why do you seem to be blaming the "useless" SAPS?

You go in and deregister the vehicle. What does eNatis status or anything have to do with anything. Go to the offices with the vehicle papers, and tell them you want to deregister a stolen vehicle. Complete the forms, and DONE!

SAPS need to update eNatis to mark the vehicle as stolen. Simply opening a case doesn't do that.

Once it has been marked as stolen Licensing can de-register the vehicle accordingly. If the current status says "Licensed" SAPS haven't marked it.

But can't the Licencing department also mark it stolen on the deregistration request from the owner of the vehicle? I can deregister any vehicle I own at any time. And they do ask for a reason.

If you are de-registering for scrap/demolishing etc you can do it with no issues. De-registration because of theft needs the SAPS to mark the vehicle first and only they can do that.

Cool, I know you work/worked with these kind of things. OP, there you have your answer :)

Thanks, exactly what I thought. I've spoken to 3 idiots at SAPS who keep telling me there's nothing they can do. I told them they need to update the status on the SAPS Circulation System. They insist the case number should be enough. License dept says otherwise.

Try and get hold of someone at your local Vehicle Theft Unit. If you're in KZN I can help out with a number.

Eventually found a competent officer who told me to contact SAPS VIS. VIS were not helpful at all and simply told me that the vehicle is marked as stolen in their system. I'll try a different licensing department on Monday.

Urgh I'm sitting in the same situation. How did you resolve it? Anyone else that had the same issue? (I know this thread is old but trying my luck).
