Got this over e-mail:

Please note that, although not published, it has now come to light that the “21 day grace period” after your car licence was due, no longer applies since 1st of March 2011. You will now be levied a R7 penalty PER DAY for every day that you exceed your renewal date. Please watch your renewal notice when received to see if you are granted a grace period or not.

Happy Driving.....

That's such bull...government is just trying to make more money out of us!

You should have received the renewal in the post, and it also states exactly when the payment is due. It's simple enough to either renew it via post or go to a Post Office. I actually feel nothing for people who let these things slide until the last minute.

We traded a car in last year, and the owner thought he would be clever and wait until the final day before renewing, and then...oops...he forgot. He then traded the car in and had to pay nearly 600 in penalties, and was highly pissed off when we asked him to pay!

Well, we have 25+ vehicles that needs to be renewed every end of January. We usually wait until about 15 February to renew, because when we renew before the due date, the license expires end of December. See the problem here?
But yes, think I should renew all my licenses again July this year and pay six months less and get the dates better. It is "only" R825 then wasted on the stupid eNatis transaction fees.

What of the people that dont get their license renewal in the post? My car needs to be licensed this month as it expirse end of march. I still have not received my renewal letter in the post. Luckily I check my disc every now and then.

Exactly and if you don't receive it in the post you have to take a days leave from work to go and do it and some off us can't just take a days leave on a drop of a hat. I have to plan 2 months in advance if I want a day off work.

Unfortunately they throw the onus back at you, you are supposed to check things like that yourself.

There's also no need to take a day off work, you can renew it at any Post Office.

That e-mail is BS

Spoke to a family member in the traffic dept that confirmed the 21 days to be valid.

*Note* Post Office payments is not yet available in the Western Cape.

But in the cape you can pay via the city of capetown website and they mail the license to you. Even less need to take a day off.

Will the Post Office do it without the renewal form ? Asking because the traffic offices don't, they make you fill in a special form which they won't have at the Post Office, and for which you have to be there in person.
