So I have very recently purchased a vehicle from a dealership - advertised as a 2007 model

Later doing some research on the VIN I discovered that it is listed as a 2005 model.

Have I been hard done by?

Some help would be greatly appreciated

date of first registration is usually what is advertised. You can find that on your registration certificate I think.

Date of first registration = Year Model

Happens more regularly than you think... I had a 2014 Yamaha XT660R but its manufacture year was 2012. Sometimes Stock moves around a lot before it is sold for the first registration...

But surely you cant be paying the same for it then?

Date of registration is just that - the date the car was first sold and registered. It will be different from the date of manufacture, and if the vehicle was in stock for a while (and spent some time on a ship crossing the sea) it may well end up taking a year from manufacture to registration. Usually it's less than that though.

So what does it say on the certificate?

Certificate says "Date of liability for first licensing 2007-04-20 (Not year model)"

VIN decoding says "Year model 2005"

So ok lets assume that it took a year to get from manufacturer to dealer etc. then another year to get sold, is my vehicle still a 2007 model even if it was manufactured in 2005?

For insurance and resale purposes yes. For buying parts, it's a 2005.

Lol i feel like I'm being petty here, but still feel like the guy that buys an 07 model that was manufactured in 07 gets a better deal than me that buys an 07 model that was manufactured in 05 for the same price.

Oh well much appreciated gents, thanks

I agree with you, especially if the spec has changed a bit in that time.

I does happen more often than you realise - I sold a brand new Subaru Legacy in April 2012, and it was actually built in November 2009.

Obviously it was sold at a discount, but the person who bought it got a car that was first registered in 2012, and NOT a 2009 - Trade in later on and the car is traded as a 2012.

In that case there was one spec change, and that was the addition of Blue tooth on the radio, but the person who bought it was happy without.

Just to make the OP slightly happier - when he takes it to trade in a few years down the road, they will ask him for FIRST REGISTRATION date, not year of manufacture.
