Hi all,

My car (in mother's name still) is in the process of being written off and the insurance company is wanting the original registration docs. The vehicle is 10 years old and my mother can't find these anywhere.

What is the process to get these reissued and how long does it take? Can it be done at a PO like the license?

Thanks in advance!

You will have to go to vehicle licensing department and request a copy of the reg papers.

Prepare yourself for a long wait .......
I had to get papers for a cousin of mine. His car was left in JHB when he emigrated, used by a relative for about 10 years. he wanted to scrap it.

I thought how difficult can this be? Well it was a mission!, Even after getting power of Attorney to act on his behalf in this matter (that was in itself a mission), that last visit to the JHB traffic department lasted 8 hours ...... Then I had the original papers and then another visit to scrap the vehicle .... another whole day down the tubes.

Afterwards I wondered if it was all worth it. It was finally legally scrapped and off his name. It may have been easier to park the car on the Moloto Road with the keys in the ignition and then simply report the car stolen ......

This is no longer a simple process. The copy can only be requested by the titleholder - your mom - in person at a licensing office. This request is then sent to a central office for processing, and returned to the requesting office once complete. Prepare to be frustrated.

Almost as difficult as getting a TV off the SABC records so that a TV licence can be cancelled.

I also undertook this task for the same cousin ------ No way was the Power of Attorney that he gave me acceptable to the SABC. He was repeatedly "told" that he had to "personally" produce evidence that the TV had been scrapped. In the end we simply reported the TV stolen with a case file and all --- 5 years later , his South African TV Licence was finally cancelled and he was informed he is no longer liable for annual renewal fees.

Oh boy... I just hope that insurance can do with the vehicle's license papers (the remains of the disk sheet) and not this...

Doubt it, they need the reg documents to get the vehicle in their name to sell it as a code "whatever" or to scrap it.

So looks like the bank actually had these docs and they're sending me the originals which is great. In the meantime they've sent me a digital copy. I see that the bank is listed as the Title owner and my mother as the owner, even though the vehicle has been paid off.

Do you think this will be ok for the insurance together with a paid off letter from the bank? for a write-off?

You might need to change the title holder. I know one has to before selling the car - I bought two cars where sellers hadn't done this and I had to wait.
