Will appreciate any advice or help.
It is for my kids new car and apart from the normal tracking capability I specifically want some sort of accident detection and response feature.

I believe there's Tracker, Netstar and Car track options available. Would be glad to get any first hand experiences.

Discovery is the best option. Their device and app is non-invasive to the vehicle, and their premium beat other insurers in my case. I had huge issues with the hard-wired trackers - battery draining specifically. Their unit killed my new battery within 3 months of constantly being drawn down and recharged.

The Discovery system promotes safe, respectful driving and the rewards can be used for fuel savings or Discovery points.

NEVER install an insurer tracking device.
I disagree, Discovery will not refuse a claim based on the data collected. Regardless, if an insurer would do this, they would request the same data from the 3rd party tracking company.

I am aware of the Discovery insure sensor. I had that previously and it worked really well. The thing is I don't want to go with Discovery insure this time, their premium is considerably higher than other quotes I got. She's a new driver and hasn't had insurance cover previously etc.

@The Darkness, thanks for that, which company was this from?

I was kind of hoping to get first hand reports of which of these companies offers good response times and roadside assistance.

It’s a tough one, most of us get the most basic tracker package without all the fancy stuff because we don’t want a stolen vehicle back.

I was with Discovery and had the hard-wired tracker installed (they use a C-track unit fyi). You also had access to the C-track web interface where you could see the car’s position, but a few years ago it wasn’t a good interface (very old-fashioned). Also if you go with Discovery Insure, you need to ask them to add “SVR - Stolen Vehicle Recovery” at an extra cost, because you’d want someone to go rescue your family. What I like is Discovery will dispatch an ambulance if they detect an accident and you’re a Discovery Health client. Just for me they aren’t the cheapest anymore, so I left them. I got tired of jumping through the hoops of safe driving to get the monthly fuel bonus, and because it’s closely linked to the amount of money you spend on petrol it only really benefits you financially when you drive a lot. But you’d have to read up on it, because a sales person might try sell you a cheaper Discovery Insure package for a lesser premium but a lower fuel rewards percentage (if I remember right you need to go with Discovery Classic and have a home insurance component on the policy with Discovery Insure).

These days I just insure with Naked and have a Netstar Early Warning system at an additional premium (which has a slick mobile app and GPS-based geofences and one of the best recovery teams you’ll get). A lot of people on here will tell you to not get a tracker so if your car is ripped up by hijackers then you don’t get it recovered, but for me I want to have a chance of finding my family if they are hijacked and have some people go find them.

I left Discovery for Naked as well because they kept upping my premiums and trying to meet their sensors parameters for "good driving" was starting to drive me insane. I'm far happier without that crap.

The insurer I left for Discovery? Was one of the big competitors.
Something to consider - go to the top coachworks and see who they have dedicated trays with. The lesser insurers will let you down when you need them most. For my daughters I never skimp on anything they'll depend on; medical aid etc. They're not yet driving, but when they are they'll get a new small car and decent insurance with good roadside assistance. I've spent so much already getting them to this point, I'd never compromise to save a buck.

That is exactly how I see it.
I meant which company supplied you the tracking device that was draining the battery.

I'll DM you the company. Their unit was pulling over 1amp constantly. Had them check it, was a brand new installation. Easily killed my 4x4 battery after a time, and nearly left me stranded in the bush (I luckily had packed a backup starter pack). They refused to take the blame, and my insurer refused to not have a hardwired tracker in the vehicle - so I left them. Brand new battery was R4k. Not a single issue since. Discovery had no issue. First month I was obsessed with not losing points for my driving. Since then I never check the app and get a few hundred bucks back for fuel a month.

Also use Netstar Early Warning on both vehicles.
Have not had an issue as yet Touch wood....but been happy with the web and app.
You can set impact notifications but it only sends via email and in app notification...I've used area notifications and driver behaviour- works pretty well. Also happy with the physical panic button that gets added to your Keychain for Emergencies - works well.

Other advice I would suggest - make sure your kid has a iPhone or Samsung, could be wrong but you can set up fall detection emergency call which should work for impact as well.

Regarding roadside assistance-insurance or manufacturer (if new vehicle/on plan) would be advisable.

I disagree, Discovery will not refuse a claim based on the data collected. Regardless, if an insurer would do this, they would request the same data from the 3rd party tracking company.

Have a read:-

I have read an article where discovery rejected claims from two clients using tracking data. Clients took it further to ombudsman. The one had the rejection overturned, the other not. Can't find the article now.
SO ja, Discovery will definately use the tracking data to reject claims. ANd i think this is their main intention with the tracking systems. Dangle a carrot of good driving refunds, but the main aim is to use the tool to reject claims.

Thanks!

I left them for Naked as well. That nanny tracking system that was supposed to save me R300 a month dwindled, to just R80 a month every month mainly because i braked to hard. When i cancelled , I told the lady that mostly it happens when i see robot change, so rather brake to be save than try and make it on orange turning red - and from the tracking data you can see i do this at speed limits. The retentions lady told me to slow down before approaching a robot. Like do these people live in the real world. Imagine the traffic chaos if everyone did this.
They also penalised me for doing 80 in 60 zone, in grabouw on N2. Nowhere on the stretch is a 60 zone. So it begs the question do they even have a legal leg to stand on if it's so unreliable?

People believe what is told to them and "promised" them.

I've been warning for years on MYBB to never install a insurer tracking system but hey what do I know I've only go 41yrs Insurance experience.
