I'm thinking of getting a tracking device installed in my car. I would like to be able to track my car whenever I please without having to call into a call centre. Preferably internet based and keeps a log of where my vehicle has been. What device or tracking company would you suggest?

I have read stories of Trackers being ripped out from dashboards so I am a bit hesitant of the type that gets connected to the vehicle battery/ electrical system. Is there a standalone battery powered device that can offer real time tracking and keep a log? Or are the Tracker type systems still more reliable?

Any advice/ comments/ experiences?

I have a Netstar Vigil in my two cars. It's a complete fleet solution with custom reports and alerts.

I chose it specifically for this as my wife works odd hours and uses either of our two cars. I get an SMS when she leaves home, gets to work, leaves work and gets home again. They also offer a follow me service where they will call her at set times after she's started her trip until she gets to her destination. You can set it to send you a text to remind you for the next service, licence expiry, and drivers licence expiry.

My wife was in an accident last month at 22:30 and I received an SMS immediately with the speed and gps location. They also called me and the secondary emergency contact number.

It costs me R207 or month per vehicle but well worth the piece of mind.

It also has an emergency button on a remote.

1. Standalone battery powered device if used as real time tracking internal battery won't last for more than a 1 month(e.g it is like charging your smart phone today and expect it to last for 3 years, it will never happen).
In order for battery to last 2 to 3 years it must be used as what they call slow tracker(going on sleep mode and send location ounce or twice per day.

2. Second question on weather tracker type system is still more reliable.

Yes, it is reliable as it allows you realtime tracking but it will also depend on the skills and creativity of the installation technician when it comes to hiding and location.(big companies focus on the tracker being online than hiding the device, responsibility to hide is left to technicians) and the size of the device count I have seen companies still using trackers as big as laptop chargers while USB size trackers are on the market

My advice is you need both slow tracker and realtime, to cut the cost avoid tracking companies and do self track, where you buy device cash(between R400 and R900 each) and you only buy R12 data monthly
