Hi all

My new insurance contract is forcing me to install a tracking device in my vehicle.

I've looked through previous threads and the reviews are mixed - to be honest, I'm not looking for anything fancy - literally just the cheapest option to appease the insurers.

I have a couple of questions:
1) Is it possible to get a device without monthly subscription (while still being able to track) ?
2) If not, what is the cheapest option?
3) Which is the best company to go with?

TIA :D

will google that, but for future reference, anything more substantial than a one-word answer would also help... :)

aaaaand does no one else have any suggestions/info? :)

"tracetec" answers each of your questions with one word.

Alright then, follow-on questions:

1) Is this really the cheapest option?
R1000 up front and R80 a month?

2) Why are these the best guys to go with?

Thanks for the help so far..

I use CarTrack... and I have never had a hassle from them...
but to be honest, i have not "needed to use them"....

Can tracetec track stationary vehicles or just moving?

No clue... tbh, I don't mind the service being as k@k as possible - probably don't want my car back if its stolen :)
just for insurance purposes, etc..

Dean, you should look very carefully into the system you want to get. Invariably, the installer has to fax the installation certificate to the insurer so, if your system doesn't comply with their requirements, you're toast. My insurer wouldn't even acknowledge my tracking unit until I faxed them a copy of the installation certificate - had the unit on for months before the that - the installer messed up by not faxing them the certificate.

DO NOT go the Tracker Route - they are linked to SAP and don't even know if their own cars are still in the parking lot.

Netstar is great and will fit a Sleuth without breaking the bank.

netstar recovered my vehicle twice, hijacking and theft incidents

try a different insurance company that doesnt require a tracker?? and do you get any discount off your premium if you install a tracker?

Mine was done months ago and I faxed it to them myself... was just commenting for the OP :P

I was asked if I would like to get a tracker for my car. So I asked for the advantages. Well, there arent any. I pay the once of installation (discount) and pay the monthly premium. I would get a small discount on my insurance premiums (about half of what the tracker will cost p/m)

so I thought, Im paying for a tracker, which the insurance company wants, but Ill be paying extra every month. Even though, according to them, the car will be less of a risk. conffuzzes the mind I tell you.

Beame
www.beame.co.za is very cost effective and is not wired into your vehicle (self powered and independent)

Your broker should advise you on this anyhow.
